Extruder starts failing towards end of print, common issue? Too hot?

Hey guys, it seems like I'm posting lots of issues sorry. So after cleaning out a *very* nasty PLA plug in the heatblock, my printer is tuned and working great! sort of. It looks like my prints are failing later into a print around the same time. Everything seems to be going well for a time until I start hearing the dreaded extruder clicks. I saw one person suggest that the extruder motors may be getting too hot? This is a standard Benchy with default PLA settings (215 nozzle, 60 bed). Anyone have any suggestions? My web searches are not showing me much.

Im going to tighten the extruder tension screws a little more, will run 5 degrees cooler, and 75% speed to see what I get.

Hi Mike,

I'm new in 3D printing so I don't have the answer but I thing I have a similar problem.

If the extruder motor is too hot, is might be because it "work" too much I guess. But why ?

Benchy boat is around 2h printing, I guess you failed occur aroud 1h30 maybe ? Have you tried to print something else for1h30-2h ? Does it go well ?

This could be caused by too much heat above the heatbreak in the extruder. The purpose of the extruder fan and that big radiator thing above the hot block is to make sure that the filament path doesn't get hot and start softening the filament above the melt zone.

One thing that can cause this is if the extruder fan is mounted backwards. That will provide inadequate cooling. Check the assembly manual to make sure your extruder fan is on the right way.

Ya, this was the first thing I checked - Fan is mounted correctly, aimed the right directly and confirmed on and working.

So I think I have this resolved. It would appear the Benchy file itself had a lot of bad geometry. I ran a repair on it in slic3r and the issue appears to have been resolved. Took way longer than I care to admit to figure that out.

I was wrong, this is not resolved.

Damn, that sounds a lot like my issue. Did you get it resolved? I'm a hobbyist and have no idea how to troubleshoot this kind of problem. I've had my mk3 for 2 months now and have only been able to get a handful of small prints out of it correctly. :/ Have you gotten any good answers from Prusa?

My printer printed fine for about 1.5 months and it started to get worse. I'm not sure what caused the failure, as it was fine.

Replacing the heat break fixed it. I would advise a Microswiss, or a NORMAL e3d heartbreak. (The mk3 uses one that I and many others think is flawed)

Edit: my Diagnostics were not optimal, pretty much I replaced everything that touches the filament going through the hot end. Replacing the heatbreak is what eventually fixed it

Thanks for all the work figuring it out and reporting back... Im in Canada so it's hard to get Amazon.com to ship up here, do you think these will do for what I need? I'm flying a bit blind as I said and you're the only resource I've found who seems to have a fix
