Extruder servo rocking (not turning)

Hello,

I've just finished building the MK3 I3 printer. First check wend ok till the load filament step. When the printer asks to load the filament the extruder servo is just rocking, rotating 1 degree forward and than 1 degree backwards. I've opened the loading compartment and inspected the servo axis. The axis can rotate freely, it is not hitting anything. Even when no filament is loaded and the compartiment is open it still rocks around. I can rotate the axis by hand without any force.
I've checked the wires, they are connected to the correct connector on board. And all previous test steps wend ok, including leveling and heating steps.

With the printer off, I can push the filament all the way into the hotend with very little force. The extruder axis will turn when pushing the filament. So to me it looks like a faulty servo. Could there be another issue? Is there a way to test the servo itself?

Did some addional tests and found that the extruder servo is ok. I switched the extrudor servo with the Y-axis servo on the mainboard. When I test the Y-axis the motor (which is now the extruder motor) runs fine in both directions. The extruder motor (which is now the Y-axis motor) is doing the same thing as the extruder did. It just moves forward 1 teeth and than back 1 teeth. I've removed the belt from the Y-axis so the motor runs freely.
I think the board has a defect.

Hi Christian,

check the board for dry joints, in the solder,

it may be that one motor pin has a bad joint...

otherwise chat with support, point them at this thread and see what they can suggest!

Re: Extruder servo rocking (not turning)

very new here, but one thing I discovered is the grub screw in the BondTech gear set can sometimes stick out too far so that each revolution it rubs against the idler gear, moving the gears apart a tiny bit. If you rest your fingers on the idler door, you can feel the grub screw rubbing each time it passes by. And, in my case, I noticed the filament would stop for an instant, so I kept tightening the spring bolts, finally to the point the drive gear would move away, not the idler.

I believe the new gear set are shipping with a lower profile grub, but I had to grind mine down to get it to work - try that sometime of a 1.5mm grub, lol.

Just a thought, but I hope it helps.

Steve

Hi,

Just finished my i3 MK3 kit. Having exact same issue as OP. Moved the Extruder stepper motor connection to the X-axis and manually moved the motor successfully using the "Settings" manual control. Frustrating. Everything else was going so well with the setup...
Will chat/email support. Wonder if there is a bad batch of RAMBO boards??
