During printing strange sound when printing in 1 direction

Hi all,

I got my MK3i printer two weeks ago and it has been printing for over one week without any problems.

Except during the last two prints where it started to make a strange sound when printing in one direction, btw my last print completely failed.

I already checked the belts, did a recalibration, but the sound persist.

Any idea what can cause this sound. I also think that is has someting to do with my failed runes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Erwin

I honestly do not hear anything out of the ordinary or to be alarmed about. But a couple of questions.
Does it happen with 1 model or any model?
If it happens with just one model, did you try rotating it in a different position?

Electrical motors can make certain sounds... I forget the exact scientific name for it.. I want to say osculation but not 100% sure. But I did not hear anything in that video that should be concerning, unless I am missing something. If so please try and point it out or record exactly when it happens.

Thanks.

Hi Erwin.
I can't hear any audio on the video, can you check please?

Is the noise like a ticking noise whilst moving in one direction?    if so, it may be the belt idler bearing failing...

I have had two  X axis belt idlers fail.  Prusa uses single bearing idlers if the bearing is not centred in the roller, you can have problems and if the bearing fails you can have problems
I use two bearing idlers now on all of my FDM printers.
like this

you can choose smooth idler if you prefer, I just don't like the thought of the teeth on the belt being squashed  Prusa might use smooth rollers to keep costs down! (I don't know if this is a fact, I am just guessing)

best wishes, Joan

To me it sound pretty normal for a print on the MK3.
The louder part when printing diagonal lines is normal and caused by resonance from two motors and amplification from frame, table etc.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Thanks all for replying, glad to hear that the louder sound when printing diagonal is normal and due to resonance.

Makes sense 🙂

I already started the same run again, will tell you how it went.

If it fails again then I will use your advice @fromprusa to change the layout of my prints and rotate it a bit.

Regards,

Erwin

To dampen the noise, the printer can be placed onto a large cement tile or similar rigid face. This will prevent the noise being amplified by the table.
