Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
I finished my build of the mk3 yesterday and since then have had nothing but disappointment with my new printer.
It went together easily, passed all tests and calibrations but the problems began with the nozel distance calibrations.. I have tried from -.50 ( no sticking at all) to -.250 ( sticks but not great). I never got a good bead like I had with my MK2S..
Have tried a few prints with the prusa logo stl on the sd but they have all been terrible.. First layers are not right and the later layers not much better.
I have a Prusa i3 STeel (old and needs to be renovated, 2 broken end stops, but it is still way better than this), I gave my old MK2S to my nephew (one of us now has a good working printer, I belived in Prusa) , and now this..what ..desk ornament ?
I am completely shocked and disappointed.. I know about all the new technical improvements.. but you could have them all back for a printer that simply properly prints the gcode that I give it .
Do I just have a problem child or are others seeing similar horrible prints?
Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
I know we all have different numbers for live Z but mine is -840 so you may be too high.
Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
It sounds like you don't have the pinda probe set correctly and the live z. Take a picture of the probe and nozzle in relation to the bed.
Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
Tried going to -.350 and it is even worse than before..
I set the pinda as the docs said with spacer (zip tie).. Do you think I should reset it with the steel plate on or not.. Previously it was not on.
I could repeat the process.. remove steel plate, reset pinda and nozzle and then recalibrate?
I am at a bit of loss to figure out why this would change things as this is how it was done before.. wouldn't the self-diagnostics pick it up if there was any error there or is the software suspect?
Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
Hi Gary
try Jeff Jordan's Live Z setting option use the v6.1 files, for pla, pegt or abs as appropriate.

this picture shows my printer starting from live Z =0 in the bottom right corner,
the middle is where it was set correctly, and the top is too much squish
if you start jeff's gcode running and compare the results, you can adjust the live Z as the print continues, your changes should be more gentle than those in the picture, because I switched quickly between the settings.
I hope this helps regards Joan

You should be setting that initial pinda height with the build plate on Gary.

Thanks folks for all the helpful htips .. will realign and retry ..
Cheers ..
Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
Hi Gary,
I completed my MK3 build last week and have been very impressed with the quality. I suppose quality is subjective and maybe your MK2S prints were immaculate, but I printed out a figurine and found it incredibly detailed.
In the end I had to set the Pinda probe lower than the instructions suggested. I really pressed it against the zip tie as opposed to resting above it. Then my live Z settings were about -150 I think. I was having issues with it coming off the heatbed after the first few layers, until that is I used JeffJordan's calibration print that Joan recommended.
The last suggestion I had was to use the XYZ Calibration, and NOT the wizard. I first used that and it worked great. Then, being OCD I went back and used the Wizard to "do it properly" and that actually made things worse. I later read in the latest patch notes that were was a bug in the wizard. You can read that below, but maybe it has something to do with your problem. Good luck.

Re: Devastated - Jaw doppingly poor print quality
Hi All,
Relaigned Pinda lower than recommended and recalibrated.. Currently at -.650 and the prints are now at or exceeding the MK2S.. Not done yet and will continue the process to get this optimized..
Thanks to all .. much relieved ..
