Creaking noise with PETG filament

Hello all,

when printing PETG I have some annoying creaking noise when filament ist drawn in by the extruder.

I have not been aware of this noise at the beginning. It increased after some printig time. For me it seems to be the friction of the PETG filament against the input of the extruder when pulled in. As the input of the extruder is also PETG there is some vibration on the filament.

Is there any lubricant or grease for the filament?
Or is there any other solution?

I'd advise not using any grease on the filament:->

Is this only a single noise as the extruder gear grabs the filament? If so then I'd not worry. If it happens at times during the print then I'd maybe worry. In both cases it might be that the gear tensioning bolt is too tight / too loose (they sound very similar). If it's fine with one type / make of filament, and makes that noise with another then give the spring-loaded bolt a half turn in one direction, if that doesn't help then the same in the other direction.

If you haven't upgraded to the + extruder, consider it.

The filament path in all the previous versions was not aligned.  PETG is known to make noise rubbing on the extruder after it left the bondtech years.

Is it possible your filament is damp?  If you have a dehydrator leave it in there for a day.  Otherwise a few hours in an electric fan oven at 100C should help.

I released the tension of the bolt and now the sound was partly better. But still apeared again some minutes later. But thanks for this hint!

Nevertheless, I am afraid this will be an issue coming up regularly. I have been wondering already looking at the intake funnel when assembling the MKS3+. Will this will really work - PETG against PETG?... :-/

Moisture I think is not the root cause. Besides PETG being not sensitive aaginst humidity it is not coming out of the nozzle and whenever I put my hands on the filament, noise is gone.
So it its quite sure vibration of the filament.

Or do you think the surface of the filament will change it's behavior with humidity (sliding friction)?

Sam,

Other reasons for creaking that I have found myself:

* the filament may be slightly stuck to the filament next to it as it comes off the reel, this can cause creaking nosies and also vary the tension.

* Depending on how you may be feeding your filament the reel can creak where it contacts the spool holder.

* Labels on the reel may be rubbing on the spool holder, check that none are starting to peel off or fouling between the reel and  spool holder.

I have had all these issues over time and these can also cause uneven layers.

Cheers

Moist PETG causes popping sounds as the water boils off, sometimes they are so continuous that they could be described as a creak.  If the filament is that damp you will see a lot of stringing.

Thanks for your comments. I partially had these issues you mentioned as well. Especially the first one sometimes comes up.
But even if I provide the filament by hand without any tension, the noise remains. So quite clear it comes from the filament feeder of the hotend.
It decreases if I change the entrance angle of the filament by hand during the print. It gets louder, the faster the feeder moves the filament.
