Crash midway through print

Hello,

 

I have a feeling there is another post about this, but I can not find the correct post nor terminology to help with my issue. 
I am running an MK3S with a 0.8mm nozzle. The printer keeps crashing mid print, and it is very frustrating. 

It seems that the print gets deformed randomly, and then the extruder runs into it and causes a crash.

 

Any insight would be more than appreciated. Thank you

I think I found the problem. The E3D component came loose (the top cylinder and the bottom block). 

There was a lot of buildup of PLA on the E3D. What I think was happening was that the plastic was coming out of the gaps on the E3D (since it was not tight), and leaking on the print. 

That is why I saw those globs of PLA, which the nozzle would hit, and ruin the print. 

I cleaned out all of the excess plastic, reassembled & tightened, and am now reprinting the part that was giving me problems

Also, these errors are never in the same place. 

Belt tension is within range

No obstructions on belt

No obstructions on rods

From the look of your pictures you have a first layer live-z issue.  Blobs - which is what you seem to be experiencing - happen for one of two reasons related to the first layer.

1.  The first layer Z height is not low enough - and the layers do not adhere well enough to the bed.  This can also be caused by a dirty bed (cleaning only with IPA leads to this eventually).  I see you are printing on the textured sheet- which is hecka hard to do without getting a really good squish on that first layer.  PLA is nearly impossible to print on the textured sheet - unless you are really dialed in with live Z.  When the first layer doesn't adhere well, the print curls up and the head runs into it, building up blobs.  That is the stringy bits you see where your blobs are torn up - the pictures seem to say that the squish is not adequate (at least to me).

2. Your live Z is too low and the print head is crashing into layer 1 on layer 2.  This causes tearing and blobs.   Printing on the textured sheet is not for beginners as dialing in live Z needs to be second nature to have success with a clean textured sheet.

Fingerprints are a distant third - which is a clean plate issue - IPA only smears it around and on a slippery sheet like the textured sheet, you get a build up of fingerprint oil spread across.

Remedies:  1.  Turn on 7x7 bed mesh leveling (minimize any bed variation contribution to the live Z problem).  2.  As the first layer starts, click the control wheel and scroll down to "adjust live Z".  That puts you into micron mode - you can be fairly aggressive without too much concern that you'll crash into the bed.  You want to see the first layer sticking firmly, and have a square profile on each thread.  There should be no or barely any discernable individual strands as your shape starts its first layer.  You can start adjusting live Z as the skirt is being drawn - so you have time to make quick adjustments.

Basic rule of thumb - end of each layer on layer 1 curls up a little?  Z is too high.  The sheet being printed on layer 1 looks like it has water ripples in it?  Z is too low.

Thank you for that detailed response! It does appear that each layer curls up a little bit. I am wondering if because I am using a 0.8mm nozzle I need to adjust that more heavily. 

 

For clarification, when you say Z is too high/low, are you referring to the distance between the nozzle and the bed, or the actual live-Z value on the printer (ex: -1.327)  

So if I am at -1.327 and I am seeing a curl at the end of end of layer 1 I should try moving closer to -1.000 or closter to -1.500

Too high, too low - I mean distance to bed.  To lower, increase negativity.  To raise, decrease negativity. so if you are still curling, move closer to -1.5 and possibly even more until you get a great squish.

now I am getting EXTREMELY bad layer shift, and I am unsure why.

In the photo attached, 1 came apart from 2. 

Screwing the two back together fixed the issue.
