Clicking noise when printing after the MK3S upgrade

I've upgraded my MK3 to the MK3S a few months ago and everything is working fine except for this clicking noise that occurs when the extruder is moving quickly up/down or left/right. I've printed many successful prints after the upgrade, so it's not an extruder gear issue. I get the feeling it's the new steel ball in this build that's causing the issue, but I'm not sure. It's not messing up the prints, but it's kind of annoying to hear the clicks randomly when the previous MK3 was near silent.

Anyone seen this issue before? I want to get a better idea before I have to tear apart the whole extruder and reassemble it. Or maybe I just live with the clicking noise.

Put a visualizer on your extruder. It helps to know when the extruder is pumping: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2638857

Clicks like that I relate to the BondTech gear slipping. You might unload and see if the filament is chewed up at all.

That or tighten the idler a bit.

If it is the filament slipping in the BondTech - do a cold pull or two to clean out the hot end.

@robert-rmm200

If the filament or the gears were slipping, wouldn't my prints also be failing to print properly? I haven't had any failed prints due to extrusion problems. I'll double check the gears again.

Dial the speed back using the front knob mid-print. If the clicking goes away, you know it's a slicer settings issue. If the problem remains, it might be hardware.

Does the problem occur with all filaments? Does the problem only happen when printing one type of feature? The Prusa infill speeds for PLA are very aggressive and may need to be turned back if it only happens printing infill. If the filament is thicker than typical, reducing maximum volumetric speed can help.

It looks like you are using an MMU (Bowden tube);  so retractions are much larger than normal.  You could try a test print using zero retraction just to test out the theory it is the filament sensor ball bearing.

MMU bowden has NO effect on retractions ( its above the bondtech gears)

David - absolutely correct; brain faded to a different printer where we were discussing 4 mm retractions.

I haven't tested this with other filaments yet, but I'm pretty sure there's something slightly lose in the extruder when I assembled it that's not messing up the prints. I printed a few more times to try to isolate the problem, but I haven't solved it yet. I think it's only happening when it moves quickly back and forth on the Y axis. I'll have to make a custom gcode to see which movements are causing the sound. It's just annoying me because the MK3 I assembled was perfect, but I must have missed something with the MK3S assembly. The prints are great at least.

There was a discussion way back when that talked about the MK3S hot end clamp not being as tight as the MK3.   You might try a wiggle test to see if the nozzle is rigid.  Also, the MK3S has a loose ball bearing now, and if the magnets aren't quite right or the flag axle screw tightened too stiff - the ball can rattle.

ps: and one other thought: the Y bearings wear and after time will let the bed rattle around.  If you gently lift the front of the bed during printing the loose bearing rattle will go away.

probably coincidental but soon after I upgraded to 3.8 I started hearing clicking as well.  Turns out I have really bad dual scoring on top X axis smooth rod.  I assume bearings already shot !  I have only had this printer for a month and less than 100 hours print time on it.

Did you follow Prusa instructions and NOT grease the bearings like all the manufacturers say you should do?

@tim-m30

yup...I will be greasing the new bearings before install this time though as Misumi recommends you clean bearings in a alcohol bath and then grease.

If you read the Misumi fine print, somewhere they say the shipping oil is compatible with lithium soaps and synthetics, and cleaning is recommended, though not required.  But good your machine is running well.

@tim-m30

I watched their Vid on it.   Ordered their grease with the printed nipple.  Cleaned bearings and then Greased.
