Calibration wizard stuck "calibrating home," power resets
  1. Just finished building a new MK3S with a BondTech BMG extruder. I flashed BondTech's modified firmware and now I'm trying to make my way through the calibration process. It's been an adventure. I'm finally passing the X and Y tests. I pass the Z test when I run it on its own. But when I get to the Z test in the wizard, the extruder (which is all the way to the left) raises up about an inch, and then the LCD displays "calibrating home." Then the extruder moves about 1cm to the right, and then all the way back to the left. It repeats this a bunch of times, then immediately starts doing the same thing with the bed (starting all the way back, moves forward 1cm, then all the way back, many times). After both the X and Y axes have wiggled around a bit, the system resets. That is, the LCD turns off and the system restarts (as if I'd performed a soft restart), and then goes back to the first screen asking if I want to perform the calibration wizard. I have no idea what's happening. Random resets, to me, often signal that there's a short somewhere, but I can't find one. Any ideas about what's happening and how to fix it?

Marking this as solved. It wasn't the z-axis calibration causing the problem. I filmed the LCD during the calibration and played it back slowly. Right before the system shorts, the bed test was actually starting. When I tried the first layer test, I had the same soft reset issue as soon as I selected the filament type and the bed started preheating. So I figured it was the bed causing the short. Replaced both of the wires, confirmed continuity, but still had the problem. Turns out it was my PSU, which was set to 220v - I'm in the US and need 110v. All good, now.

There are many factors that influence calibration successfulness: something loose, some obstruction in movement, etc. If you did Factory reset after Bondtech firmware update, then I recommend you contact Prusa support (live chat in Prusa shop). However, being the fact that you use Bondtech extruder and non-Prusa firmware, I have no idea how much of support you can expect. Is worth a try, though.

Thanks. I also discovered that the system crashes (power cycles) when I run the first-layer calibration, immediately after I indicate filament type. Sounds like contacting support is the next step.
