"Calibration failed! Check axes and run again" at the start of XYZ cal

Hello! I'm having some trouble with my XYZ calibration and I haven't found anyone else online who's had quite the same issue. I get a "Calibration failed: Check the axes and run again" message right when the extruder is supposed to lower down to the bed and start that 12-minute calibration process.

I've seen lots of posts and videos where people got the same error message, but none of them failed the moment that calibration sequence was supposed to start. I've quadruple-checked the alignment of the hotend inside the printed parts that hold it, I've tried adjusting the PINDA probe, and so far nothing's worked. I'm wondering if one or more of my axes are misaligned, but the timing of the calibration failure is confusing me, I'm not sure what would cause that failure as soon as that calibration sequence begins.

is the red light on, on the pinda probe?
that far away from the bed, the LED should be showing red

if it's not, it is likely that the Pinda is faulty!

during XYZ calibration, the printer waits for the pinda to trigger, to indicate sensing the build platform.

if the LED is dark, this emulates Pinda Triggered.

if this happens at the top of the frame, XYZ calibration will fail.

some causes are...

Pinda faulty,
Pinda cable faulty,
Pinda cable connector loose
Pinda cable in wrong socket!

I actually have never seen a red light on the PINDA probe...

Thank you!! I'll look into this further when I get home and verify that it's faulty.

Hi,

I'm getting the exact same error message.

As soon as I initiate the test, put my piece of paper on the heat bed, and the nozzle lowers, it stops and generates this message.

And I DO have a red light on the probe.

Really frustrating, and I can't find anything about this in the documentation.

I'll add my "me too" to this list, passes self-test just fine and fails when lowering to begin finding the 4 points. First instance of exactly the same problem I'm seeing in this forum. I've built a few of these printers and this is the first time I've hit that message, or any calibration errors at all for that matter. All was fine before tearing it down for the R3 extruder upgrade, and now I'm stuck with exactly the same indications as the OP, with a red light on the pinda probe. Everything looks as it should, there's even better movement as I swapped out cable lacing for the zip ties on the extruder bundle - really helps with clearance against the frame. I'm at a loss here, the only thing I can think of doing is tearing it back apart and putting it back together again. It would help if the error message wasn't so generic and actually gave some info on what actually triggered the error instead of referring you to the book which gives no direction on this exact error. The devs have some more work to do in this area, more meaningful error messages would be a wonderful thing. It all makes me wish we had limit switches back, instead of relying upon motor load for limits.

EDIT: I'll add that the light on the pinda probe goes out like it should when you hold metal underneath it. Also, the Z-axis stops at 10mm above the bed when it fails, each time. It's almost like it's expecting things to sit where they do on an MK2 with it's shorter build volume, instead of a MK3. I've done a factory reset on the printer, with no change in results.

Okay, I've finally got it to pass XYZ calibration - here's what I did:

1. Reset to factory defaults a second time (Power off the printer, press and hold the select switch on the display's rotary encoder and power on the printer, choose option to clear all memory)
2. Power down the printer and unplug it, then click the power switch on for a few seconds to pull any remaining juice out of any capacitors.
3. Connect power cable and power on the printer. At this point it should greet you with the same greeting as with a newly built kit and allow you to go through the wizard.
4. Proceeded through setup and calibration wizard without errors.

Removing the power cable and turning on the power switch may not be necessary, but I find it always helpful when trying to ensure all settings are erased from a device - I've been bit by the holding voltage bug before, so this advice is from experience.

I found it strange that I should have to reset to factory defaults after just changing the extruder body, but there are some other oddities with the firmware, in particular x and y crash detection, so I guess it's not unthinkable.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone, I'm back in operation again.

Hello 3d Printers,

I tried Chief's suggestion and I'm still getting the same error. I actually thought it was a PINDA installation problem (may have bent her wires too far) so I ordered an additional two PINDA units. Installed the new ones one at a time, carefully this time, with the same results when configuring using the Wizard, specifically on z-axis, calibration:

Calibration Failed!
Check the axis and run again.

I really think the problem lies in the code because the unit can find Home: pin and PINDA (the PINDA light turns off head stops as expected: a few mm off the bed, before the pin kisses, and PINDA finds her circle on the plate).

The chances of five unique and unrelated builders getting the same exact error, including Chief who has built these units before, points to a software bug (assuming hardware has stayed constant). My firmware build is 3.3.1-845 (July 12).

Hello 3d Printers,

I've figured it out my problem: one of the trapezoidal z-axis nuts is tighter so the z-axis configuration keeps failing due to the imbalance between the left and right "mis-stepping" motors.

Solution is I had to loosen the tighter nut with the one of the stepper screws.

I had the same problem, but what I noticed was that when it started the calibration it did not raise the z axis completely to the top as it showed in the video (took me quite a while to notice this) which I saw someone say was caused by the something being tight on the z axis and causing it to think it was already at the top of the z which then meant as it tried to lower it was trying to go to far and getting the error.
So I loosened the screws on the black trapezoidal nuts and then when I re-run the calibration it took it to the top of the z-axis and my calibration worked fine.
