I'm a little concerned after having read further details in some of the docs (like the MK3-MK3S upgrade) and from my visual memory of the part that my extruder collet might not be fully in the out position, and I wonder if this could be related to a squeaking I've had (mostly on retraction).  

Is there any cunning but safe way to check this on the printer, or am I condemned to taking the entire assembly off the x axis?  I noticed there was a note about leaving slack on the extruder motor to assist with servicing, so I'm hoping this means there is an easy way to get to the top of the PTFE tube / collet.

If I get in there, is it worth fitting a clip under the collet?  If it has been loose, is there any remedial action required?

The printer is currently printing OK, other than the annoying squeak.

I've had to take my MK3s hotend apart about 6-8 times now since upgrade (just over 2 months). You can check for the PTFE problem without disassembly by opening the extruder idler door and manually trying to unload the filament. If the PTFE tube lifts up, you will likely have rebuild your hot end. If the PTFE tube does not move, follow other jam/clog procedures.
