A Tale of Two Prusas

Hey all,

First time poster.

So on the advice of a trusted resource on 3d printing, I bought my first Prusa MK3 about three weeks ago.

It was a kit and being the maker that I am, I enjoyed putting it together. Mistakes were made.

While it took me a while to get it properly calibrated, it started printing beautifully but then things when horribly wrong due to some of the mistakes I had made during it's construction. The X-Axis/Extruder blew up so I knew I would have to print some new parts to replace them. I attempted to do this on my Makerbot but alas it was too small, cannot print PET and not high enough resolution.

SO!

I ordered another MK3.

Using the lessons learned in building the first one, the second one went quite smoothly. It calibrated almost immediately, I had a little trouble with the extruder/idler but was soon past the issue. I have now printed all of the parts required to fix the first MK3 (I still need a new fan), but it has performed admirably.

I do have one complaint about it. The SD card was faulty and caused a lot of agony while trying to pull off seven hour prints that caused the printer to reset five to six hours in.

I have confirmed these faults using common tools available under Linux and am a little disappointed that such poor quality SD cards would be included in the kit. Once I replaced the SD cards with higher quality cards, I had no further issues.

I know...TLDR; ...just some observations and musings about my experience.

SD Cards are not the most reliable devices.

I have had some good ones go faulty...

ideally we should keep the original sd card pristine, and use other cards for general use... but I fr one, never do!

Hi Wayne,

I don't know why you didn't just order replacement parts instead of a whole 'nother printer, but whatever... 😕

The SD card issue has been brought up before in this thread. 😉

I have a love/hate relationship with SD cards. It’s awesome that they’re super cheap and available everywhere these days. Even the local drugstore carries them. But that’s also the downside, they’re super cheap because they’re super cheaply made. There’s no TRIM like a proper SSD, and they’re generally using the same FAT32 file system as Windows 95.

I had a personal project, a data logger using a few parts attached to a Raspberry Pi. That Pi running 24x7 would end up destroying its SD card in 4-6 months. The data logging did not overwrite the data files, and the SD never filled, so I presumed it was read-write cycles from Raspian itself. Didn’t matter if I got an expensive “brand” SD or the Microcenter store brand. Still, even with that history, I would think a typical SD card should last nearly as long as the printer.

That reminds me, I should get a backup card for my OctoPi...

When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"
