3D Benchy first print failed

Everything seemed to go fine on my first print, a 3D Benchy, using PLA.  It got about 80% done, but then when it was building the side arches on the pilot house, something happened and the hotend hit the print and moved it across the plate.  It looks like the ends of the arches pointed up somewhat, which then got in the way of the hotend.  Is there something miscalibrated; do I need to change anything?

Best Answer by Technical Ted:

Are you using the textured sheet? You'll want the smooth one for this. See my thread here:

I would guess that you were the Z offset is off and the hotend pulled the print from the plate.  Can you post an image of your Z calibration of the bottom of the Benchie?

Also, did you wash your plate?

Yep, that's what I said... he'll want the smooth sheet for this one. That's the only way I could get one past the point where he is having trouble. They popped off the textured sheet every time. The textured sheet didn't give enough adhesion.

I am sorry.  I typed that on my stationary bike.  I must have been hypoxic.  I use my textured all the time to print benchies.  I have used both, but for the last year, just the textured.  I get better adhesion with it.

What's your secret? I used a brand new sheet, never touched it. Cleaned it with 90% multiple times.... always popped off at the top of the arch.

Anecdotal evidence would suggest that they get better as they wear in.  Sometimes 🙂

I've never had much success with mine either, then again I also haven't spent any time trying to wear it in as I just want to print.

My secret:  Not much of a secret.  I bought my MK3 printer 3 years ago.  I washed the plate before I used it after reading a post on reddit.  I used Dish Soap and a nonscratch sponge.   It still did not stick well.  My problem looking back is that I thought I had my Z dialed in but I did not.  It takes experience to get it dialed in.  I switched to the smooth for about 6 months.

One day I switch back.  I gave it a good scrubbing, dialed it in, and it just worked.  I did dial the filament in until it started to wave (too low) and then backed off just a little.

@Neophyl is right.  It does "season" with time.  My textured sheet is almost too adhesive now.   Printed require a little effort to remove.  I use hair spray and glue stick as releasing agents with some filaments like PC blend, ABS, and some PETGs.  Hair spray might give you that added boost if you have a difficult to remove filament (when cold) or one that does not stick as well as you want on a hot bed.  I use a can of Aquanet every 2-3 months.

That's funny.  I also just tried printing my first Benchy on my new printer, and had it fail in the exact same location.  I even pulled it out of the trash to confirm.  I agree with the assessment that it's your Z offset.  Looking at the bottom of mine, and comparing it to the ones I printed on my old printer, mine definitely could be pressed down into the plate more.  Adjust the offset a bit more, and I'm guessing that will solve the problem.

Just realised I have not printed a benchy yet on my MK3.

Thats just not good enough, have just slapped myself with a gauntlet and promptly accepted the challenge.

🤔

Tank you very much!

Thanks everyone.  The problem appears to have been that I was using the textured sheet.  The smooth sheet I ordered just arrived this morning, and I printed another 3DBenchy with no issues.
