2nd layer adhesion to first

Hi,
It seems that the 1st layer is OK, but the 2nd layer doesn't adhere well - I can see the edges where it turns 180 degrees slightly tilt up, which causes the nozzle to grab them and pull the whole thing off when applying the 3rd layer...
I've tried multiple times, adjusting Z as best as I can, and it seems to happen at the same place, only in the back and center.
See attached image.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Ami

It looks like it's actually a layer 1 issue ... look at my avatar as another example. Search for discussions about adhesion, and bed cleaning. Basically any finger prints on the bed will kill layer 1. Washing with windex, or a few drops of dish soap and rinsed thoroughly, then wipe with alcohol usually does the trick. And only handle bed by the edges, don't pry parts off with finger tips... etc.

Hi Tim and thanks for your prompt reply.

I already tried that - cleaned thoroughly with windex several times to no avail.
I can see the 2nd layer rising at the 180 degree corners, and only in the back center. Then, when the nozzle comes to lay the 3rd layer, it grabs onto these lifted edges and pulls the whole thing off.
Perhaps the first layer can have better adhesion, but it's not getting pulled off anywhere else, only at the back where the 2nd layer corners rise above the rest...

Thanks again,

Ami

What filament are you printing? Windex cleaning is only good for PETG as it stops the filament from sticking too much. If you are printing PLA you need to clean with 99% isoprop at least. Also your 1st layer looks too high, need to be more squished to the bed.

What are you trying to print?
Your picture looks adventurous. Are there strong overhangs, like rounded edges on the bottom? That, by principle, won't work.

Try Z-lift of .4 to .6mm.

Squish your first layer more into the build plate, and print the first layer slower for better adhesion.

Use a brim, especially if you have very thin structures on the bed.

Re: 2nd layer adhesion to first

Thanks @necator @olef @Tim,

Per your suggestions, I cleaned the surface with IPA, added a brim, and adjusted the Z offset about -0.1 mm.
It's printing now, and seems to have passed the previous fail point, although the brim made the print pattern completely different.

I'm printing with the supplied Prusa PLA, and trying to print a draft of a Gallo speaker stand that I designed in TinkerCad

I will update with the final results.

Thanks again for all your help, there is still a lot for me to learn and experience...

Cheers and happy holidays

Ami

@tim.m30 Thanks for your PM, unfortunately I can't seem to be able to reply in a message, need more experience points to 'use that feature'...

@webmaster - I understand why you won't allow PM for new users, but I think that replying to someone who has already sent me a PM, would be nice to have, and won't introduce any serious risks...
