Need ideas on why this is happening?

My printer has been operating flawlessly for 4 months. This morning, after printing several short (< 1 hr) jobs, it starting doing this:

I cleaned the nozzle and reran the first lay calibration (which was still fine) and it printed correctly again. Now several prints later, the problem is back. I cleaned the nozzle again, but it still prints like this on the first layer. It looks like blobs of filament.

Do I need to change the nozzle? Is there a better way to clean the nozzle than the little needle that came with the kit? (A bit of a task with my poor eyesight).

Thanks for any help or pointers to articles I can pursue.

Did you try to use a higher nozzle temp?

I did to clean the nozzle. For printing, I've been using the PrusaSlicer default (215 C) for months with no problems. Are you implying that as the nozzle gets older, I need to increase the temperature?

I would just try it. I often print PLA (mostly eSun and Prusa) at 220 °C. An increase of 5 degrees is not much but can make all the difference sometimes. Can depend on the humidity level, the age or make of the filament. Also the material of the nozzle, hardened steel needs about 10 degrees more than standard brass, sock or no sock on the hotend etc.

And if it works, it is an easy fix. 🙂

Great insight! Thanks. The outside temperature here has gone way up causing our A/C to go on. That means my basement has gotten colder. 4F colder. I have an enclosure that I normally only use for ABS that raises the temp by 10F. Easy enough to try that. I'll do that tomorrow and post the results. Thanks again for the help.

Basement temp was 64F this morning. Increased first layer temp to 220C and it solved the problem. Thank you very much for this very valuable tip!

(Note: I posted this to the wrong forum. It should have been in " Original Prusa i3 MK3 & MK3S & MK3S+")
