Heatbed MK42 wants to become a MK52 (12V)

Hallo to all,

I own an old MK42 which was part of a Prusa i3 MK2S. I like the magnetic heatbed with different steel sheets. So I decided to rework the MK42 to make it become an MK52 version with 12V.

I tried 1 position to find out if it is possible using a tool like Dremel to prepare the slots for the magnets. ==> This is possible and it is not so hard as I thought at the beginning. It was done freehand - next holes I will use a milling-template (sorry for the wrong wording?) to get it more precise.

Now I have a question:

I would like to use same positions as PRUSA is using. Or at least close to these positions. I found a dxf-File on https://github.com/prusa3d/Heatbed_MK52_magnetic
But when I open it I don't get a drawing only a textfile. Name of the file is: slots-for-magnets-05.dxf

What way do I have to go to see an dxf-drawing?

Best regards, Clemens

It can be that easy (when you know how to do)

Found a solution: Don't open the file directly from Github (then you just see a text file). Download the file to your computer and open it for example with a CAD program (for example LibreCAD) and you get what you want - a drawing.

Maybe helpful to others,

Hey Clemens,

looks like a interesting idea. Did it work out?

Best regards

Yes - works fine, but at the moment I can´t finish my printer because I am waiting for a special epoxy resin which can handle temperatures above 120 °C. This is necessary to glue self built "special nuts" on the bottom of the heatbed - I want to have 9 points to fix the heatbed to the heatbed carrier.

It is for this project:

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't you cut through the conductive heating tracks to make the holes for the magnets?  You can see the tracks in the photo's you've posted.  Surely at best the bed won't heat evenly and at worst it is liable to shorting if the magnets touch the cut ends?

Completely true - but the Heatbed MK42 has circuits on both sides and in regular only the top side of the heatbed is used for heating. So no problem cutting the circuits on the bottom side of the heatbed. I did heating tests after cutting the holes of the magnets and times were completely the same to the situation before.

OK then Clemens M., I just thought I ought to mention it in case... didn't want you to switch on and it to blow up in your face!
