Y-axis issues

Started a print before leaving for work today and didn't have time to check on it with my Octoprint camera. Needless to say it failed terribly and caused a horrific jam in the extruder. Had to take the hotend apart and replace the PTFE tube.

Got everything put back together and did a calibrate Z. It failed on the 4th location. Looking at the probe it is about 10mm behind where it should be probing. Decided to check the Y-axis so I moved it by hand back to the endstop and made sure the LCD showed 0.00. I then moved the Y-axis and the farthest it would move is 190 and at that point the Y belt holder hits the Y belt idler.

It's acting like the y distance in the firmware has been set to 190 and this would be why when it moves to the 4th point it has moved it 10mm too far since the calibrate routine moves to a specific location. I have tried 3.06 and 3.05 firmware releases with the same result.

I have tried everything I can think of and am now looking for suggestions.

Re: Y-axis issues

Is Y motor pulley tightened and clean (no debris on it)?

Yes. I even loosened the belt 1 notch because I had it pretty tight.

Re: Y-axis issues

If you do Auto Home and then send gcodes
G1 X100 Y0 F500
G1 X100 Y200 F500 (if Y200 is too much, try Y150)
repeatedly to printer, does the bed move to the same position every time, that means the error is systematic? If no, do you hear the sound of lost steps? Does the printer behave the same in Hi-power mode?

Edit: oh, now I see you report the printer moves further than gcode says. 😕 I can't explain this. The only possible reasons are:
- Number of steps per mm stored in firmware has changed.
- Diameter of Y motor pulley has changed.

Reload firmware plus factory reset?

Yes, I have reloaded the firmware and done a factory reset.

I agree that it seems the steps per mm have changed but the firmware I have loaded are hex files from Prusa and not one that I have compiled myself.

I'm stumped. I may have to break down and get hold of support. Time difference is a problem between the US and Europe.

Re: Y-axis issues

OK, connect to the printer (Pronterface/OctoPrint terminal) and issue the command:

M92 Y100

Place a ruler on the bed, next to the nozzle at the zero position on the ruler. Then you can send the following:

G28 Y0
G1 Y200 F400

The bed should take 30 seconds to move forward 200mm and the ruler should measure the movement at 200mm. If it is any different or the motor skips or stops before the 200mm mark, there is a hardware fault.

I'll give this a try when I get home from work. Luckily I have another MK2 I can hook up and print with until I get this sorted out.

Zeroed the y_axis and ran G1 Y100 F400 and it moved 110mm. Sam in Quiet and High-Power mode. Something with the hardware just isn't right.

M92 Y90.9 has me running for now. Really shouldn't have to do that. Pulley is fine. Maybe the motor is going out? Would be odd since this is such a new machine but I guess anything is possible.

Re: Y-axis issues

Richard

Vojtech has mentioned situations where there is a fault in the stepper routines (sending steps too quickly) so I wonder if reducing acceleration may help:

M201 X1000 Y1000 E600

Problem is that this GCode needs to be included at the start of every file - I don't think it can be stored in EEProm. Do a few tests reducing the Y value.

I just went ahead and placed M92 Y90 in my start G-Code script for now. I have sent an email to PR about my problem. We'll see when and how they respond.

Re: Y-axis issues

Im having the exact same issue. It started 3 days ago after a failed print and i have been unable to find any information on it at all. I know this is an old post but were you able to find a solution to this problem?

I ended up getting the Y-axis motor replaced. I took the bad motor and placed it in my home-built machine to test further and it exhibited the same issue. Not really sure why the motor failed.

I was finally able to solve my issue by changing the steps per mm for the Y axis in the firmware. Running it through calibration and then setting the steps back to default and its been working fine since 🙂

M92 adjusts axis steps: http://reprap.org/wiki/G-code#M92:_Set_axis_steps_per_unit

I used matter control to change the steps/mm saved in EEPROM
