XYZ calibration keeps failing. How to diagnose?
Hi,
I'm upgrading from a DIY Prusa i3 to an original Prusa i3 mk2, and I have successfully built the printer. The self-test finishes without problems, but unfortunately the XYZ calibration keeps failing with the message "Calibration failed. Please consult manual.". Now this is a pretty generic message. Is there a way to figure out exactly what the software finds objectionable, like whether a specific calibration point or the whole Y-axis are shifted?
Some background info: I have tried the calibration maybe 20 times by now and have seen different scenario's:
1) (This one is the most common): Complete procedure (4-point and 9-point) finishes, and looking at the light on the PINDA probe it actually detects all 9 points. After the 9th point it informs me calibration failed
2) (Happened a couple of times): Failed message appears after the 4-point part of the calibration.
3) (Happened once): Calibration fully completed, but when it started the mesh leveling procedure it missed the first point and a message appeared "Front left calibration point unreachable"
4) (Happened once): 4-point calibration completed, and 9-point calibration started, but at the 4th point the z-axis kept going and the hotend crashed into the bed. Seems like it was completely missing the calibration point, even though it had detected it during the coarse calibration.
Especially the 4th scenario, even though it happened only once, is alarming to me as it seems to suggest the XY-movement is not very repeatable. Could the steppers be missing steps? I can easily move both axes to their extreme positions by hand when the steppers are powered down, so they're not sticking or anything.
I've read through the manual and these forums, and tried the things suggested:
* Check axis alignment: Everything looks good as far as I can tell. Y-axis is perpendicular to the X-axis, and properly offset (Using the power supply bracket connecting it to the Y-axis as a reference)
* Lowered the PINDA probe. It is now almost as low as the hotend, but no difference.
Any help would be appreciated,
Jeroen
Re: XYZ calibration keeps failing. How to diagnose?
For what it's worth, I ended up reflashing the firmware using the firmware update tool, and it immediately passed the calibration with flying colors ("Your axes are perpendicular").
The printer is now happily printing, and I am thoroughly impressed by the quality. I have printed both the 0.2 mm Adalinda and the 0.05 mm treefrog from the included SD card, and they both came out flawlessly.
