XYZ Calibration - epic fail

Last night I finished building my new MK2S. Since then I have been trying to run the XYZ calibration. Every time I do it gets to the improving bed calibration stage, gets to point 7 and whilst it is calibrating there are some odd grinding noises. It then gets to point 8 where it plants the hot end straight into the bed. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this? I've adjusted just about everything that I can think of but every time it piles into the bed. I now have a nice hole in the PEI sheet.

Try going up on your pinda a smidge. Loosen the screws and use pliers to rotate it about 90-180 degrees counter-clockwise. Also, check on bed to make sure wires are running directly beneath a calibration spot.

As for the grinding, check to be sure the bed isnt hitting anything like zip-tie ends. Do you know where the grinding is coming from?

I've just been chatting to someone from Prusa and they suggested lowering the PINDA. The design of the PINDA has changed. They don't use that nice adjustment method that they used to. Now there are 2 bolts holding the PINDA in. This seems like a step backwards to me.

The bolts hold it in much better then before. Older design had lots of complaints of it coming loose and cause self-adjustment.

OK, I have found the problem. I actually built the printer incorrectly. I used the wrong smooth rods for the Y axis. I got the Y axis rods and the Z axis rods the wrong way around, So when it got to point 7 on the calibration it had actually run out of travel on the bed. The noises were the bed hitting the end stop. When it got to point 8 it had completely lost its Y calibration and couldn't see the detection point. Which is why it didn't know where the bed was and hence why it crashed straight into it.

I've ordered a new PEI sheet (anyone know where I can source these in the UK?) because the hot end has left a nasty dimple in mine. I am hoping that it is just the PEI sheet and not the bed itself.

I'm glad you solved your problem, but I'll also add my experience for further reference. 🙂

After I had to remove and reassembled the entire extruder (bad filament that contained impurities that clogged it), the nozzle was sticking some 0.4 mm more that it had before. The it resulted in nozzle getting planted into the headbed. I lowered the PINDA probe some more, and it was fine then.

BTW, another important note, that I'd like to stress some more: after having moved your printer around, especially if you tilted it on its sides, you really should run the XYZ Calibration. Running just the Z Calibration can end up in having a nozzle hitting the heatbed. The heatbed could have moved a bit, and the probe counts on the old calibration points, so it does not find them (properly).

On the other hand, I hear that preassembled printers come without the XYZ Calibration option (having only the Z Calibration option), so I'm reckoning that the zipties holding the heatbed might be a little loose, allowing the bed to move just that fraction of milimetre. The XY axis screws are tighten really strong to the frame, so that shouldn't be the cause in my case. I'll remount them ties to see if it helps...

I've run all of the calibration programs tonight. Everything is now perfect. I am printing my very first print. It is not looking too special so I think I have some more tweaking to do before I'll be completely happy.
