x axis belt shredding

Need a bit of help here. Factory built MK2 is shredding the belt only on the right side. Any clue as to why this is happening, and what is the cure ? We have two machines running 24/7 this is the only one it is happening on.

Mine is doing roughly the same thing (factory assembled).

It looks like the idler just isn't lined up with the carriage.

I am having an identical problem. Only one the right side, and there doesn't appear to be a clear way of alleviating it.

Try to experiment with belt tensioning screws in X-end-idler printed parts. If they are screwed in too much, X-carriage extends beyond the pitch of Z rods and twists. The same if they are screwed too little. Adjust belt and tensioning screws so X-end printed parts and X rods are perfectly in line. Then the idler will go OK.

Hi David!

Can you elaborate a bit more on which screws you are referring to? Are you talking about the two screws that touch the ends of the smooth rods in the X-carriage? If so, there seems to be very little adjustment available as the screws barely touch the rods.

Yes, I mean those two screws. And it's strange, in my setup they allow to push the rods about 2mm out, which is far enough to overstress the X-carriage assembly. Check if there is any debris in screw head holes, it could limit their range.
By the way, are the X rods pushed all way into X-end printed parts? And did you use the rods of correct length?

I have the exact same problem, I played with the tensioning screws on x axis, will have to print some more to find out if it helped.

Re: x axis belt shredding

I had the same issue. On the right side of the X axis with idler. It would rub the belt against the front facing side of the idler. I first noticed it because of the black bits on the orange printed Z motor mount. Inside the the printed part with the idler I also noticed belt bits.

I checked alignment over and over. I noticed from the top looking down, the top part of the belt sits more towards the front of the printer than the lower half of the belt. You can see this as well in the slight twisting of the belt forward and back when the X-axis moves from side to side.

The only thing that worked for me was to loosen the belt just a bit. In another thread I joked that it should 'plung" and not "ping" when you pluck at it.

This.

This is probably my issue. When directions say "make it tight. make it ping" that is exactly what I will do, but I think you are right. I think there is enough slop in the components and design that making it too tight will cause this to happen. I wish there was a way to have it extra-tight but also not have the belt shred. 🙁

I did check the two tensioning screws, and they appeared to be adjusted well. I used a multimeter to detect when the screw was just contacting the end of the rod, and then added the same amount of tightening to both to make sure they are even. No change in print results.

I've had the same issue. Could someone make a video of what a well-adjusted belt sounds like when plucked? I'm thinking there's a big difference between 250 Hz (the minimum that I would call a "ping") and 50 Hz or below.

Re: x axis belt shredding

I pay literally no attention to pings or plucks or whatever. I make it tight just enough so the belt doesn't rattle or oscillate during quick movement changes. In fact the belt is relatively loose with no negative impact to print results. No rocket science. 🙂
The bonus is less stress to motors and their bearings.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm having the same issues. If I loosen the belt anymore it will skip, and that's not very good for print quality either >_< I've played with the screws as well but can't seem to alleviate this issue. Anyone else that has found a workable solution?

I recall that some one modified the x-idler part so that the tension could be done with two screws. I saw the part on thingiverse.

I have been using this one one of my printers for quite some time. It works great. It has the added bonus of not requiring the whole x-axis to be removed if you want to change out bearings or rods. Just remove the side part and you can slide the rods right out.

Hi Alexander,

It seems like I have the exact same problem but i can't find the cause of it yet. Have you solved this issue already?

How I solved it, should have reported back. This was on a factory built machine. I just reprinted the part and replaced it. The screw holes must have been slightly off. May have happened when they were assembling it. I still have some belt tilt, but the belt shredding is gone.

Re: x axis belt shredding

Bringing back this old thread since I was running into this problem. Hopefully what I did may help someone search this later.

Both sides of the belt on my x-axis was shredding/grinding away gradually. Luckily I haven't used the printer as much, so it is mostly minimal.

There was a few things I tried but I think the last one helped me the most:

  • Tightened the bearing on the right side
  • slightly loosen the 2 screws on the right side by the rods, the x-rod tension adjustment.
  • tighten/re-adjust the x-axis pulley piece
  • completely redo the belt tension
  • I found out I did the belt assembly a bit wrong, mostly by having excess belt on both the left and right side of the extruder, which you were supposed to only have it on the right side at most and almost nothing on the left side. This seemed to line up the belt just barely enough to not rub against the bearing as well as the x-axis motor. Not sure if did fix the problem long term, but now it doesn't look like it is obviously shedding. I'll try to post again to see what happens and if my problem was solved.

Though I'm considering printing out that modded x-axis piece from this thread earlier.
