Upgrading from i3 *rework* to i3 MK2, my observations

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, it's not quite an i3 MK1 topic, and not quite MK2 either.

I bought the Průša i3 MK2 upgrade kit even though I have an i3 Rework, which has some notable differences. I thought I'd share my observations and process. Any feedback is appreciated!

* * * *

1. The electronics
i3 Rework uses RAMPS 1.4 and the Full Graphic LCD Controller (at least, mine does). The upgrade kit expects a Mini-RAMBo and an (non-full-graphic) LCD Smart Controller. I don't know a work-around here; I'm just going to have to buy those parts from Ultimachine today.

2. The Y-stage
The Original i3 uses four M8x205 threaded rods in the Y stage assembly, so all the parts in the upgrade kit use these as well. The i3 rework uses M10x210 threaded rods instead. Furthermore, on the rework the rods are 22mm apart centre-to-centre; on the i3 MK2 they are 20 mm apart centre-to-centre. This means lots of the printed parts are incompatible: the y-corners, the y-idler, and the y-motor printed parts. My plan is to re-use the y-corners and y-idler from my i3 Rework, and print a modified y-motor part. I've attached the .scad file and .stl.

* * * *

That's as far as I've gotten so far. Think I'll run into more incompatibilities?

EDIT: Fixed the SCAD/STL, which had the wrong hole spacing

Hello,

i did the same (or nearly the same) to one of my self made i3s. I managed to migrate the software to the ramps/shield, bit only for the small display. I also have some full graphic displays, but had not enough time yet, to migrate the firmeware. Maybe in the future. If you need any help, feel free to write back.

Hi, I'm going through the same process upgrading from an i3 Einstein variant to MK2. I have replaced the LCD with the RepRap Discount Smart controller instead of the Full Graphic Display in order to get the firmware to build. I'm able to see things on the screen and interact with it, but the kill switch doesn't work and I don't pass the system self-check test correctly yet. I'm using a RAMPS 1.4 board and I've tweaked pins.h to reflect that but so far am not having any luck. Could you please post the changes you made to the firmware somewhere lucas?

I managed to update my pins.h file by backporting from Marlin. It looks like the errors about the end stops go away when I use the Prusa ones from the kit. Not sure why my old end stops aren't compatible but I was only using one left in a spot where I'll have to print another part in order to mount the MK2 end stop. The only error I get now is about Z axis motors so I'll troubleshoot that on the weekend.

Has anyone had success with upgrading their prusa's? I have a prusa i3 rework from replikeo, and i am considering getting the upgrade. Does it actually work with the rework?

If you are handy enough, you can fit MK2 upgrade in almost any frame with enough space for 255x210 heatbed. 😉 You just need some working 3D printer to prepare customized printed parts.
