Thermal Runaway

I've assembled my printer and printed a couple of test prints and they are perfect.

However, I thought I'd give some of the 100um and 200um supplied sample gcode a try and I cannot get either to complete.

The 200um failed after a handful of layers with a thermal runaway and the 100um almost got to completion before it also failed.

What I have noticed is that the hotend temperature, when printing, drops to about 203 degrees and never recovers back up to 210 (the target temp). It fluctuates between 203 and 204 at best.

When assembling the printer I did nothing to the hotend - assuming as it was factory tested that it was all correct. But this problem seems to me as if the heater cartridge might not be thermally secured.

I'd be interested for any suggestions, opinions. I'd also be interested to know how long someone else's hot end takes to heat up from cold to 210 degrees as I think this would be a good indicator of whether the cartridge is in nicely.

Re: Thermal Runaway

Try reducing the cooling fan to, say 60% and try again.

Re: Thermal Runaway

I too had a Thermal Runaway error several hours into a print. I had tried a number of small prints without error. What heater is the error related to?

Hi Larry. It's the front part cooling fan. Under certain conditions it over cools the extruder... leading to thermal overrun. And print failure.

Regards Joan.

Turning down the cooling fan indeed did the trick.

Larry - thermal runaway in this case isn't really runaway - it's triggered when the temperature of the hot end is 15 or more less than requested for a period of time.

I'm really happy with my printer. The quality is amazing and the lack of fettling required is a blessing compared to my delta.
