Stringy 1st layer & warping questions

Right now whenever I print the first layer tends to be stringy. It prints fine in the end but I would like to know what is causing this. I have adjusted the z axis but that doesn't seem to help. I also use alcohol and window cleaner to make sure it's very clean.

I also have an issue where the outer edges of many prints curl up slight and get warped. I print pla @ 55 deg. I tried increasing 1st layer temp to 60 but that didn't help much. Only when I use glue stick a lot in area where I know it will warp does it stick. Is the solution a brim, glue, increase bed even higher (if so how high?), or is it something more serious like my bed not leveled?

It looks like the stringiness is due to the travel moves from one object to the next in this photo. Are you running the default Slic3r profiles that Prusa3D provides?

Is the skirt around the whole object also uniformly smooshed down? I think you can probably lower you Z a bit more to ensure good adhesion.

Re: Stringy 1st layer & warping questions

Hi Anderson

Regarding the default PR Slic3r profiles - when I last checked, most of the profiles had a first layer height of 0.15mm. This printer has a MIN_Z of 0.2mm. Therefore the first layer can be under-extruded.

The other issue is that during Z Calibration, the nozzle does have a tendency to ooze and excess plastic can get stuck to the nozzle which can then be deposited around the print on the first layer.

As it happens, these dampers were the only model that I have printed with Slic3r and of the 8 parts, there was only a single part remaining stuck to the bed at the end of the print.

Gave up with Slic3r and reverted to KISS and Cura.

That looks like adhesion problems, not the slicer's fault.

I have tried a couple of times to print using only the bed after cleaning with alcohol, but I find that some shapes just don't stick to the bed. I left a print running and in the morning the whole head was embedded in a ball of plastic! The parts had come off and stuck to the nozzle. I had to literally cut it off with a soldering iron to get the plastic off the head without damaging wires!

Since then I just use the white glue stick wherever I'll be printing.

I've used a few different slicers and find that Slic3r has come a long way since the beginning, it does a really great job!

Re: Stringy 1st layer & warping questions

Yeah, so why does the same part stick when sliced with KISS or Cura?

Answer is that I have set both of those up myself to work with my printers. You will see the Slic3r explanation if you read my post.

Seems that you also have the same issue with Slic3r...

More info: I have nozzle gap set to 0.18mm (hot) by adjusting probe height. "Live Adjust Z" is not active and set to 0.000 on my Mk2.

KISS is set for a first layer height of 0.25mm offset by -0.05mm causing over-extrusion of about 25% for first layer to ensure a good "squish" and therefore good adhesion with a bed thermistor temp of 60 degrees (in reality 53 to 58 degrees at top of bed).
