Try different USB cable in different port on your PC perhaps?

Silly question - you are not also connected to the printer by Pronterface or Octoprint when trying to flash perhaps? Something is stopping the updater communicating with the board.

Can anybody offer a solution to this firmware failure message?

Has anybody else experienced this problem when updating firmware? Used firmware updated v2
Shut everything down both computer and printer them rebooted and tried again. Same result. Tried. one more time, same deal.
Any thoughts appreciated.

which OS do you use? Can you connect via Pronterface/Octoprint or another computer to the printer? Try to shutdown the printer, unplug the USB cable, power on the printer and plug in the usb cable again? Before trying to upload firmware make sure that a serial communication is working, Pronterface is a part of the Prusa Drivers install package.

I know that you are telling that you are using correct COM, but sorry to insist... if you are using windows, do you check in configurations, device manager, universal serial bus controllers.... really witch COM is using? I suppose that you already check but... 😉
