Save yourself a tumor hassle, order a silicone sock NOW!

Well after my first tumor/blob due to a print lifting off the PEI sheet (not enough surface area on the bottom of the print), I wound up with a massive tumor/blob that rendered my hot end useless. I ordered another, replaced it, and I was back in business. But, this time I added one of the blue silicone socks that I ordered directly from E3D.

Well, I had another print failure today and I am not sure why. The print shifted quite a bit and I suspect that it was due to a filament tangle even though it was not tangled when finished. This caused the print to shift significantly and the printer began creating a lot of "spaghetti." I noticed also that I had several bits of blue silicone from the sock on the print bed also that was torn away from the sock. I am convinced that this was due to molten filament sticking to the sock and them being ripped away as it cooled. THANK GOD! No tumor!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now all I have to do is replace the sock (I bought 9 since they are so cheap).

Trust me! The little blue sock saved my a lot of down time and money! Buy some NOW! Joseph should really consider providing some these with the new printers IMHO.

Yep, well worth the money. Also help stabilize the temps when you PID tune so there are no downsides for me.

Just be careful that you check the nozzle is not leaking into the silicone sock.
I had an issue where the filament was not coming out. Even though it kept feeding. It turned out I hadn't tightened the nozzle correctly so there was a big blob of melted filament in the silicone sock when I took it off.

So many people say this, so it makes me wonder what the disadvantages are to it, and also, why doesn't any manufacturer build this into their design? I mean, silicone works, but an easily printable part that would essentially get stuck to the glob and then come off with it seems like it'd work better? Also, is this a big problem, and if so, should it be included in the kit? Still waiting on mine, just trying to understand how common this problem is.
