I wonder if WD40 would also work to remove the glue. It has the ability to go under the glue. I somehow hate limonene 😉

Nice instructions, but what is d-lemonene? If it has some kind of acid, it may corrode exposed metal surfaces.

After viewing the video I've decided not to change the sheet myself.

Can I have a suggestion?

If anyone from the company is reading this, please consider adding either a replacement service or a replacement MK2 heatbed to the shop.
By replacement service I meant: I would send my heatbed with the old PEI sheet to Prusa and except them to change the sheet (for a fee of course) and send me the new one back.

Thank you for watching. As for the damaged PEI, well that was a combination of things. Firstly, when I removed the Prusa test piece from the bed, it ended up lifting the PEI sheet and I could not get it flat after that. Over time, some prints ended up making the bubble in the bed sheet worse, upon removal. Some pieces I could shift away from the middle but with others I could not avoid it. Since mostly I print with PETG and that stuff sticks well, and the combination of tight nozzle offset and a sharp corner on a spatula caught a PEI bubble and the rest is history.

Yah I was thinking about WD40 as well, but since I do not have a spare bed (or Prusa 3D printer) I did not feel like experimenting.

Thank you for watching. I think Josef already addressed the spare bed inquiry in another post some months ago. If I remember correctly, the reason for not having a spare bed is purely due to the printer demand and warranty claims (please correct me if I am wrong), and as such are not able to spare any extras for the e-store, for now. As for sending it in for servicing, I think, would be too costly for many customers, in money and time.

Great video, This much hassle in dismantling is steps too far involving bed realignment. I have damage in the top right corner of my PEI MK2 bed, I guess called bedding in with the firmware/software. Its an area I do not envisage printing in soon. (I do however have a spare PEI sheet) As regards removing the old PEI sheet they say use Limomene, difficult to get sometimes, a similar and also organic product is genuine Turpentine, it works just as well. And does not involve dismantling the printer bed.

Do you mean turpentine can be used without removing the print bed, but lemonene can not?

No. Obviously not mik. That procedure was not necessary in the first place. Replacing the PEI sheet can be done using Turpentine to remove the old sheet. And installing the new sheet with the heated bed in place. My point Limonene = Turpentine they will remove the glue under the PEI, with the bed in place on the printer. It just needs care and is easily doable. Affixing the new PEI sheet can be done with the bed in situ also.
Why people over complicate things is beyond me. I was taught KISS as an Engineer. Back in the 1970's and I taught it throughout my career into the 2000's

i don't know if it works for the glue that holds the PEI sheet, but instead of limonene or turpentine based label solvent you could try the following, more ecological method (works reliable for removing a lot of labels and glue):
💡
mix 125g bicarbonate of soda* + 60ml veggie oil (sunflower or rapeseed oil will do) + 15ml washing up liquid for about a minute in a preserving jar.
shake it thoroughly before you apply it to the clotted surface (because the bicarbonate tends to settle out if it stays a while).
apply it with a paintbrush on the surface and wait at least 10 minutes. then remove it with a warm water soaked cleaning sponge (such a sponge with a rough side, that you'll use in your kitchen for cleaning pots). repeat the process until it's clean.

*) baking soda should do the job as well.

another aspect beside the ecological: you can get all the ingredients at your well sorted grocery store (or from your kitchen) without waiting for any ebay delivery. and furthermore: it's a lot cheaper 😉 .

i would recommend to use acetone afterwards, to get the oily remainders off the surface.

meanwhile i got some tiny scratches at the surface (from several object-removing-attempts), would it be a good idea to smoothen them with 00 steel wool, or would it do more damage to the surface ?

Also, has anyone tried simple clipping the PEI sheet to the PCB rather than using glue? Then it could be removed very easily if damaged.

If the PEI sheet is not glued on, then it will lift off with the slightest warping force applied to it. Not good.

@jeffjordan the method, you posted for removal of a PEI sheet, you stated you did not know if it works. I know using turpentine works. Your post and details are irrelevant, as postulated by you. BS . Have you tried your method?

Just replaced my PEI sheet and it was easier than expected.

My Steps:
- Heat Bed to 60C
- Peeled a corner and pulled it off - most of the glue came off with the sheet. Used pliers and a metal blade and as i pulled i took a pass at the junction between the PCB and the PEI with my blade to loosen it from the bed. Took about 5 minutes to remove it.
- Let the bed cool down
- Soak with Paint Thinner with a paper towel on top
- Waited 10 minutes
- Scrapped the rest of the glue with an old credit card
- Repeat a few times ( I did this about 3x times to get pretty much all the glue off)
- Reapplied PEI Sheet

Thanks for these suggestions of how to replace it without removing the bed. I've spent a lot of time getting the printer perfectly calibrated and I don't want to screw it up again by having to remove the bed.

I will see if I can replace mine this weekend using either Turps or Paint Thinners.

my posting was ment serious and neither funny nor a joke.
i use this method to remove labels that are very sticky from jars or plastic items where you normally use limonene.
and it's not as noxious as turpentine is.

and no: i haven't used it to remove my pei sheet because actually i don't need to replace it.

if you don't like my postings you can ignore them or disagree with them. but beeing abusive and offending as you are is not the finest english way.

What do you mean by "washing up liquid"? Detergent or soap? I am curious as to how this works chemically? (ELI5 probably required as I'm not a chemist by far.)

but i'm no chemist either. found this recipe somewhere in the web a while ago, as my can of limonene spray ran empty.
