Prusa i3 mk2 - Switzerland UPS shipment

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum so first of all: Hello!/Hallo!/Czesc! /Ahoj!/Bonjour ! 😉 to all of you.

I am totally new to 3D printing, reading a lot, trying to learn what I can.

I choose mk2 as my first printer. I will probably order it in next few days but before I will do it I would like to ask if anyone of you happy mk2 users ( 😉 ) shipped this printer to Switzerland.

I know more or less the tax and custom fees (I am not Swiss so I had to check that before) but I would like to know if there are any “surprises” from customs and UPS once printer is delivered.

Thanks for any help 😀

Looking at the shipment map; there are plenty in Switzerland: https://fusiontables.googleusercontent.com/embedviz?q=select+col0+from+1mmZsdWsLpnRsGl1o_GFIMfxdVrIoBNW00b2x1Kdo&viz=MAP&h=false&lat=39.466227628871614&lng=-44.19143881875003&t=1&z=2&l=col0&y=2&tmplt=2&hml=GEOCODABLE

Maybe your neighbour has one?

Otherwise, sorry, can't help...

Peter

Yeah, I checked the map…plenty of users in Swiss. The problem is that my German language skills are …well, lets say optimistically - basic 😉 (Disadvantage of working in English speaking international company) that is why I was asking here 😉

dutycalculator.com helps a little bit (8% of import tax), but it still not stating all the costs. (UPS fees, additional costs etc)

Thanks for trying 😉

As a worst case I will take that risk, and write the costs here.

Hey Pawel

I'm also from Switzerland and bought my first printer (the kit) here.

Since i live right at the german border i've sent it to a mailing adress there and picked it up and just hoped customs wouldn't check me when i went back so i didn't have any additional costs.

Above a value of CHF 300.- you need to pay 8% on the total value. This friendly invoice will be tucked on to your Prusa package.
UPS may charge as well for non basic import services, this includes a thorough inspection from the customs (unlikely).
see here for more information:

I hope you will have fun with your printer, it's totally awesome!

hi pawel,
im from switzerland and i can tell you, you can mostly calculate with 10% to 15% from the selling price including shipping.
normaly you pay 8% VAT and UPS have a "Non Credit Account Handling Fee" of 2.5% and minimum of 21CHF.
Hope this helps! 😉

Fantajim, ralph.k thanks for helping with this.

I also live close to the border and I occasionally order staff from HobbyKing to parcel shops in Germany and then pick it up. Difference is that HK does not remove tax from their price exporting outside EU, making it even more expensive sending it to Swiss…if you add tax and customs on top of the HK price ;(.

In case of Prusa price is reduced by tax when exporting from EU (god job  ) so if this is really like 10-15% I can even save some time and money 😉 not much but still something.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Projects form my RC planes are already waiting for the printer so I hope I will have fun with it 😉

Re: Prusa i3 mk2 - Switzerland UPS shipment

I had to pay around CHF 77.- to UPS for the import handling and tax. I remember it because all together (printer and import+tax) I payed nearly exactly CHF 777.- 😆

PS: Where in Switzerland are you located? 😎

sorry, I'm a bit late.

I received my kit last summer directly to Switzerland and I had to pay only the UPS bill over 73 CHF. No customs duties and no VAT.

Regards Jens

This bill includes the 8% VAT (about CHF 53.- in your case) and the expenses to UPS (CHF 20.-) for handling the import. There are no import duties on electronics like there are on alcohol, meat, cars, etc. 😉

Thanks for the info and (at the same time) sorry for the late response.....i was out for couple of weeks.
My printer should come in next 3 weeks(ordered at 21.01) so i will keep in mind additional fee for UPS.

Marc, I live close to Baden 🙂

I could not edit my previous post somehow so ... new one.

I can confirm 77 CHF. I received the printer Friday 10.03.
The only recommendation would be to register on UPS web page to get the account. I had to pay cash when package arrived, i believe once you are registered you can get just the bill to pay. Is that correct?

Could be. I had a bill in my letter box a few days after. But I don't remember registering... 🙄

Hi!

Just to confirm I understood you right:
You can save some money with shipping if you ship it to Germany (because CZ and Germany are both in the EU), then bring it over to Switzerland yourself? 10-15% is a huge amount of money on a $500+ product, in my opinion!

Okay, I gained some insight since I wrote this post...
1. When shipping to Switzerland, 0% VAT is calculated. Instead, UPS will collect VAT on delivery (which amounts to about CHF 50-60), and they will also collect their processing fees (about CHF 20).
2. When shipping to Germany, 21% VAT is added already on the shop website. I assume UPS will then not collect any additional fees (since shipping is already paid for)?

The conclusion is that it is actually cheaper to order directly to Switzerland, since Swiss VAT is so low.

See attached screenshots for comparison.

This is exactly the case. The gain is not huge, couple of franks according to my latest purchase.

I shipped twice already from Prusa directly to home in Swiss, works without issues. The only thing i would recommend is to get yourself UPS account. Helps with shipment planning.
