Problems printing first layer with PLA

I got my original prusa i3 mk2 last month.

If I print a cylinder, the first layer is very rough / damaged - see attached pictures. I used the shipped PLA filament with standard settings, 0,2 mm layer width and rectlinear infill.

Do you know the reason why the areas are not filled completely or a possible solution for that behaviour?

Best Regards,
Frank

My suggestions...
*Clean the bed good
*Run the v2 calibration gcode and adjust the filament

*slow down the first layer print speed to 40%
*add a 2 layer raft

- Try increasing the flow rate for the first layer
- Increase bed temp
- I have another 3D printer, circles are always a challenge. Print a square about the same size, do you get the same problem (post a photo of the square).

- Which slicer are you using and which profile (fast, draft, normal)
-Try using a different slicer

Try live Z-adjust, let one circle go a litter higher, the next circle a little lower. I think you need to raise the z offset.

Also, what is the humidity where you have the printer stored at? Are you taking any measures to keep the filament dry. Did the problem just start happening?

Yes, the problem did just start happening.

Humidity might be a reason. Could you recommend measures to keep filament ddry or to dry up the filament after it went wet?

Frank

I doubt it's damp filament. It does look as though the nozzle is too close to the bed.

Clean the nozzle (Ultimaker - Atomic Method) and raise the nozzle 50 to 100 microns.

Re: Problems printing first layer with PLA

When you extrude filament does it go down or does it curl back up towards the nozzle?

Curling up back towards the nozzle is usually a sign that a cleaning is in order. I use the atomic method and then run some eSun filament cleaner.

Hello, thanks for your answers so far. Today morning I reload filament ant it went down and doesn't curl up.

I have attached a picture showing some problems in the first layer. Probably you experts could judge if the Z axis might be incorrect.

On the left side I set the Z axis 50 microns higher using the "live adjust Z" function. I think that has improved the situation.

And I see some filament rests at the outer side of the nozzle (and the surroundings of the nozzle). Could such rests cause problems or is it only necessary to clean the inside of the nozzle?

Re: Problems printing first layer with PLA

My best guess in looking at the 1st layer, it looks like the filament is not flowing as fast as it should. I think you will have to use the atomic method or run some filament cleaner made from eSun.

Re: Problems printing first layer with PLA

Also, does the defect you circled in red happen in only 1 corner of the bed? If so you can use the main menu on the LCD to play with the z offset for the problem corner. A test would be to print the 1st layer of the Prusa logo in just that corner ( you can change the position of the logo to the problem corner in slic3r or cura).

Re: Problems printing first layer with PLA

Maybe not relevant but on a different printer when I get a first layer that has that bumpy wavy look it is usually that the nozzle is too close. Just had it yesterday!

Thanks to all of you for your answers!

The solution was that the nozzle was too close to the bed. I adjusted it and the first layer is much better now.
