Printing extruder parts with ABS or PETG?

I'd like to print the extuder in order parts to have a backup, especially the P.I.N.D.A holder. I am currently not setup for ABS printing. It's the middle of the winter here so I don't have a way to vent the room properly. So, can I use PETG to print the "hot" parts? Supposedly PETG has the advantages of both ABS and PLA. I tried it and so far it is as easy to print with PETG as with PLA but I am not sure it can withstand the required temperature as well as ABS.

I understand that Josef has said that all parts can be printed in PLA and they will work.

ABS gives a bit more thermal bandwidth in case something goes wrong.
PETG is very similar temperature wise to ABS...

but PEtG doesn't shrink as much as some ABS so your parts might turn out a little larger than expected.

might be worth printing a test piece.

I'm going to print the extruder pieces using this filament: http://two-bears.eu//index.php?a=161

Hopefully I'll never have to use the spare part, but if I do I'll let you know if it worked. 🙂

I printed extruder parts in ABS and found they came out too small. I had to scale them to 101% and then they were pretty much spot on. Maybe it was just my printer.

I was thinking about this filament but the price in the US is about 50 Euro so I passed on it for now.

I am printing now the extruder body. Once it finishes I will compare it to the original part dimensions and report back.

I may add that I printed the pinda probe hat from the official prusa site and it turn out to be slightly larger. You probably need to downsize them to have the same dimension, since I'm sure they're suppose to shrink in ABS

🙄 wow, this filament looks very promising. do you have any experience with it ?
does it print like usual pla (recommended printing temperature is quite low, even for pla) ? printing speed seems to be quite low (compared with other pla stuff).
shrinkage is quite high (0.53%) .... might be as tricky to print as abs, but only at lower temperatures.

➡ anyway, i think i'll give it a try...

I'd be interested in feedback regarding the bioFila plaTec. Look's very interesting!

Haven't tried it yet, from the looks of it the main downside seems to be the price, but I'll see soon how the extruder parts come out. I'm a little puzzled about the temperature as well...

I should be able to try it today or tomorrow.

This is my result so far, printed at 215 for the first layer and 195 otherwise.

Great looking prints, Gab.

One question, the skirt looks gray compared to the off-white parts. Did you lay down a raft or some other support structure as a base/first layer, then switch filaments?

Re: Printing extruder parts with ABS or PETG?

🙄 wow, this looks really nice and tidy, especially the tricky parts with the air outlet and the overhanging structures ❗

@gabriele: can you provide your complete settings (fan ? layer height ? retraction ? speed ? etc...) ?
and did you use slic3r or s3d ?

btw.: got my bioFila PlaTec in "Basalt" today

ooops, another important question comes to mind: what about the dimensions ? do you encounter some shrinkage (easiest way to check might be the idler) ?

Boahhh !!! Great material 😮

But also a great price 😕

No, same filament, just that it's a little translucent so you can see the black bed under it.

I used Slic3r 1.31.6, Prusa default settings except for infill (IIRC I went with 10%) and print temperature (195⁰ as posted above).

ooops, another important question comes to mind: what about the dimensions ? do you encounter some shrinkage (easiest way to check might be the idler) ?

Everything seems to match the X carriage that I had printed previously with the Prusa PLA, and from what I can tell everything seems to match the provided ABS parts, but I haven't tried disassembling anything. So if there's any shrinking it's not immediately visible and I think the parts will work in an emergency. (Can't tell if they would work long term without actually installing them...)

Re: Printing extruder parts with ABS or PETG?

for which material did you use and altered the default settings (pla, abs ?) ?
only 10% infill ?
layer height normal (0.2mm / 200µm) or optimal (0.15mm / 150µm) ?

sorry for bothering you with such questions...

Re: Printing extruder parts with ABS or PETG?

No bother at all! Sorry for not being clear enough. I used the Prusa PLA settings with the temperature change.

It seems to me that the Prusa printed parts are printed at 10% infill so I went with that, but that is up to you. 🙂

Now I don't remember if I went for 0.1 or 0.15 layer height, perhaps 0.15? I think I might have deleted the Gcode from the SD card, I'll check when I get a chance.

Re: Printing extruder parts with ABS or PETG?

💡 now in "basalt", not as perfect as gabrieles print, but the platec is very easy to handle and makes a very hard and reliable impression.
i sliced this one with simplify3d, 25% infill (honeycomb) and 0.15mm layer height ("optimal settings", pla) and printed it with 215/195°C hotend and 55°C bed temperature. the print took 3h36 at a default print speed of 50mm/s.
no warping and it matches, from the dimensional point of view, the genuine prusa abs print perfect.

in reality it's a bit darker than the picture
