Printer has its own ideas

Every once in a while, in the middle of a print, my printer will take off, usually in the X and Y axes, seldom in the Z, and start its own design. I am using Slic3r for Prusa. My designs so far are very basic. The printer's excursions are accompanied by loud buzzing noises. What is happening?

Re: Printer has its own ideas

based on your raw description: loose pulleys at the x- and/or y- stepper.

but a more detailed problem description, supported by pictures or (better) a short video clip would improve any expectations about an answer.

Re: Printer has its own ideas

Here is an example, attached, of its misbehavior. The 4" square base has two successful layers, and it was on its third and last layer when the printer decided to get artistic. I am pretty sure I had looked at my sliced layer preview in Slic3r. This is the most common form of the error. Once I just got a centimeter Y axis shift with the piece still fastened to the plate and centered in the skirt. Another time a Z axis shift put a blob of PLA on a piece. I have seen this geometric X-Y pattern or something like it a few times. (Yes the skirt is attached to the piece at the lower left corner, not a problem.)

My belts twang nicely. The fact that the design is so geometric makes me wonder if Slic3r is throwing a random artifact into my Gcode. That said, I have never seen one of these in the layer preview. Maybe my printer just gets bored with the flat surface, that or I need to shield my printer from cosmic rays?

When it doesn't misbehave, I get beautiful prints. I love my Original Prusa I3 MK2!

Re: Printer has its own ideas

I have not seen it with the loaded g-codes. (I have printed the whistle, the dog and the helical gears successfully.) Also, I think the buzzing noise primarily happens when the Z axis is being naughty. The buzz comes from the printhead, possibly the extruder motor is fibrillating? I will perform more research and watch it more carefully. I will also try reloading all of my software. I appreciate your help!

I designed my square tray in OpenSCAD. The finished ~10cm square gets a rim about 5mm wide and ~3mm tall.
