Print fan not spinning automatically?

So I've managed to get my printer set up and ran the calibration gcode, noticed the big print fan didn't spin up. According to support this is expected. I then pre-heated the printer and start to print the Prusa logo and after about a minute in the fan still didn't spin. Is this right? I know it works because I can go into temperature, change the fan speed from 0 and it will spin up.

edit: Ah, support answered this question for me: When printing PLA the fan only starts up after the first layer.

Re: Print fan not spinning automatically?

Hi Matt,

I think you are confusing two fans. You have two fans, one little on the left, one in front.

The little one is used to make the higher part of the extruder keeping cool. It starts automatically as soon as the extruder reach 50°C and shut down when extruder temperature go under 50 °C. This fan is managed by the firmware and cannot (AFAIK) be controlled by settings of the slicer.

The big one is blowing air on the part you are printing. This is usefull when printing PLA, but should normally not be used when printing ABS. This fan is controlled by gcode commands, and this gcode is added in your gcode by the slicer, depending of the fan settings defined here.

I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

Re: Print fan not spinning automatically?

What if the front fan will not turn itself on by its own strength? My fan will function for the remainder of the print if I manually spin it once, but if I leave it alone it won't turn on at all. I opened up the fan to make sure there was no debris blocking the fan, but it seems clean. I've already ordered a replacement part, but I want to know if there is something I could do to fix the original.

It functioned properly up until I upgraded my mk2 to mk2.5.
