Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

My printer has not arrived yet and as I live in an area where the time to get spares would be measured in weeks I have been getting a few bits and pieces in case of breakdowns.

I have currently got some spare PEI and the proper sticky stuff to attach it to the heat bed. Some more filament has arrived as well.

I will have to get some rubbing alcohol and would getting some spare 0.4mm extruder nozzles be advisable? Maybe some spare belting as well?

Anything else I should have on hand? Just in case.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

- eSun filament cleaner
- acupuncture needs / piano wire
- 3M blue painters tape (and only the stuff from 3M)
- super glue
- acetone
- print cleanup / removal tools ( https://www.amazon.com/25-Piece-Printer-Tool-Kit/dp/B01FZTLO9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486425396&sr=8-1&keywords=3d+print+kit )
- wire wrap
- thin zip ties
- car fuses
- solder / iron / multimeter
- hex tools if not getting pre-built
- light colored PLA from a vendor that users here use ( black hatchbox, silver prusa, white hatchbox)
- Esun petG filament if you plan to print spare parts
- sugru
- zip ties in the small skinny size
-thermister
-spare fans
-UPS
-raspberry pi w/ webcam
- copper replacement wire
- Extra rolls of PLA. Because the MK2 prints so well / reliable I have found my printing has gone way up.

Round edge print removal tools. These two are the most important in my opinion:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A81FXMK?psc=1

M3 screws, different lengths.

Loctite.

Digital calipers if you plan to design stuff. Get two: a small one and a larger one that is the size of the print bed or bigger.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

Are you getting the kit or factory built? If factor get a spare y belt holder.

Find some way to get the pinda protector in PetG or ABS

If you can, get the extruder body (two pieces) printed in ABS or PetG.

You may not want to turn on the printer until your print bed is covered with blue tape (the stuff from 3M works, most others don't).
Only remove the blue tape after you have printed 10 objects without issue. Many users have given their MK2 battle scars in learning the in and outs of the printer or not having all the pieces placed correctly ( this includes me ). Biggest mistake is not running autohome after hitting the cancel button.

This soldering kit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01712N5C4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

608 bearing, at least 8 so you can make the filament holders

JB Weld steel reinforced epoxy.

If building the kit, some have needed a tap (search this forum) . I got a factory built unit.

Extreme hi-temp silicone self healing tape.

tweezer set

PTFE lube / sewing machine oil

Bondic plastic welder ( one with the blue led to cure with)

If you plan to only print PLA, with the bed at 55, then PLA is fine for the PINDA protector. In my experience it doesn't get warm enough to worry (perhaps 30-40 C).

BTW, I ordered some plaTEC to print the extruder. IMHO it is enough for a spare.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

My experience with the pinda and PLA has been different. I was printing an object and part of the model had multiple strikes to the nozzle and pinda. The pinda protector fell off from the strikes. I think if I had not caught the failure the pinda may have caught the model and broken the holder.

I have also found this happening more when filling the plate full of parts. My other 3D printer can only print a few parts at a time but the MK2 with mesh leveling... just awesome.

I run the printer almost every day with new print models so depending on how you use the printer the pinda may not be needed.

If you will be printing long jobs, I would recommend getting some way to remotely view the print job. The easiest is a baby cam monitor but you will need some way to stop the print which is why I run OctoPi / OctoPrint.

Thanks everyone.

I have ordered some of the things listed.

Where would you get spare thermistors from? I guess E3D would be one such place. But any other places like ebay, or are they custom made specials?

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

I got my extruder Thermistor from E3D however it still has the plug and socket connector that prusa now replace with a joint... so you will probably have to sort that out if you buy from E3D.

I assume the hot end uses this one then http://e3d-online.com/Thermistor-Cartridge

Surprisingly it is available locally for me. I am actually quite surprised what I can obtain locally. I thought everything would have to come from overseas.

That looks like the thermistor for later mk2 printers.. 🙂

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

If you place an order with E3D you should probably add the PTFE tube to the list.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

As I just learned (the hard way) yesterday, add a few meters of 6mm GT2 belt to your list of spare parts.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

Well So far I have got some socks, a thermistor, blue 3M masking tape, some kaptan tape, acetone, three spare genuine E3D nozzles, nozzle cleaning drills, bowden PTFE and a couple of fittings, spare PEI for the table and locally au made filament I already have hand tools for assembly and have ordered some spare timing belt. I forgot to get some isopropyl alcohol. So I will just clean it with rum, it is alcohol. 🙂

I did not bother with bearings as I suspect a lot of issues are lubrication based.

Here is hoping the printer gets sent next week.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

💡 cooling spray would add nicely to your list. you can use it sometimes to help removing the printed part from the pei sheet.

What sort of fuses do the electronics use? There seem to be many types these days. From the round glass ones of big and small size to the automotive blade type which also come in at least three sizes.

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

as far as i can see, they are standard 12V car fuses that you can get at your gas station:

Re: Pre-emtive consumables for the printer

I would add a small clipper to your list. The kind used for trimming the leads off of soldered through-hole component, if you need to cut a zip tie and don't want to risk damaging the wires.
