Re: Postage is to expensive.

I am totally agree with all of you guys. I am in the US and the shipping cost from PR is insane and ridiculous. If they have a cheaper shipping option, I definitely will get more stuff from them.

I too would love to grab filaments but at $51 shipping compared to Sainsmart $5 it's a no brainer 🙁

Re: Postage is to expensive.

I'm sure prusa can lower the shipping charge but they won't because small companies like Prusa also make their profit from shipping charge.

For example, my wife owns an export company she does ship many merchandise to Asian countries from NYC, US. To ship 5lbs of goods cost her $11 dollars with guaranteed 3 day delivery ($7 for 1st lb and $1 extra for each extra lb) however if she goes through UPS or USPS at consumer rate will cost $25 to $30.

Again, it's clear that Prusa does make profit from the shipping charge from their customers.

Sorry, but that is total rubbish. In former Eastern European countries, UPS is a very expensive courier; I am quite amazed at the deal PR have put together with them.

Neither you nor I have any idea how much shipping costs PR; when you include the cost of picking and packaging orders, I really wouldn't be surprised if I were told PR were making a loss in that department.

Re: Postage is to expensive.

Of course the make a few buck on shipping, they are driving a business here.

Also consider that they probably count in cardboard boxes, packing material, paperwork etc, etc in the shipping cost.

Any proof of that?

No?

Best not to make such a statement then.

EDIT: FWIW, the shipping cost (Express Saver) for 4 spools of filament to Slovenia calculates to just under €100 - excluding packaging and handling. I paid just under €19.

Just talking from experience, the company i work for handles all of the costs around shipment under "Shipment Costs" and add an adminstrative cost to it. That would be the profit.

Fair enough, your company rips off its customers by making a profit on shipping. Doesn't mean that all companies do the same.

Did you check on the shipping calculator I linked?

Bear in mind that cost calculator (not only on UPS site, but also on DHL, DPD and any other company) show the price for typical client. If you have company, you sign agreement with shipping company and that gives you much much better prices. I have agreement with UPS in Poland and belive me - I have much better price for international shipping than Prusa have and my company is much smaller than Prusa. I think everyone includes packaging, handling, packing tape, stretch foil etc in shipping cost. I do the same.

Re: Postage is to expensive.

Yes, I am aware of corporate discounts. So basically buying from PR is saving me more in delivery charges (€81) than the cost of the filament.

That's quite good news then and nothing to complain about. 😉

Re: Postage is to expensive.

Well I think that PR's business is not based on selling consumables or profit on shipping costs. And I also think they are pretty happy that they sell very little spare parts as they need parts primarily for assembling new printers and kits. That's why I don't think shipping costs are going to change in the near future. 🙂
Actually almost everyone can find almost all consumables in (e)shops near himself and for better price, so there is no need for PR to play competition or fill a gap in market.

I would rather take my next holiday in Prague than pay $62USD for shipping.

Please note, if you are looking at US$ prices on Prusa'a web site then you need to add 21% VAT to those prices if you choose to go to Prague and pick up printers/upgrades/parts directly.

My son goes to school there and I thought it would be great for him to stop by Prusa and bring back parts and such this summer. Turns out shipping would have been cheaper than VAT. And if you want to try to get your VAT back at the airport, it is a time consuming and laboriously bureaucratic process which often has a service fee all of which makes it a very unattractive choice. (Then there is the airlines dwindling free baggage weight limits)
