*PoP* then bricked?

Was printing fine and finished a print no problem. Started to reprint a second one and during the 9 spot height check I heard a POP or a SNAP and printer shut down. So far unable to determine the problem. Main fuse on 110v inlet is OK as are all 3 fuses on the control board. My fear is a dead power supply (4 month old printer) , any have any suggestions on what else I might check?

Digging deeper into the loss of power I removed the power supply for inspection and testing. As I feared the power supply was dead as a doornail, 0 volts on both outputs. The unit I have has a Chineese made MeanWell clone. NOTE: there is a 5th fuse ! Inside the power supply has a 6a glass fuse, mine was good darn it.

Looking closer I noticed the input voltage selector was askew.

OK then. Continued to disassemble the power supply being careful of the heat sink connected parts attached to the outer case for thermal dissipation. then I touched it with the end of a forceps and it immediately popped apart. Well hell ! I then removed the switch's outer housing exposing the contacts inside. Flipping the board over it was easy to find the solder points that correlate to the contacts. Since this printer lives in the US , there is little chance it will ever need to be plugged into 220v mains. The switch is a double pole style but the traces are bridged on the underside. I added solder and fused the 110v side to the center.

Retesing the unit showed 12v on both outputs, YEA ! Reassembled the printer and all is well again.

How that switch became dislodged so easily and failed months after it was set will always be a mystery. This has shaken my confidence in it however and have ordered a genuine MeanWell that I will do a custom install with when it arrives. I will likely wait until my MK2S to MK2.5S upgrade arrives.

Spoke too soon. Few hours after reassembly, same occurrence. ???

Wonky switch was not the problem?
Failing pwr supply? (2nd failure 0 volts output)
Thermal shutdown?

Lost....... No idea what to check

Well, discovered another component on the power supply was not as it should be. This time it was a thermister used in the input line conditioning. The solder joint was broken and it actually arced in front of me during testing : ( . I re-soldered it in and things are again printing normally. ALL of the connections on this board are very dull, this normally indicates a cold solder joint. I don't have the tools to reflow the entire board so I am just using the printer under direct supervision and unplugging it when unattended.
