PLA to ABS First Layer height
Hi Guys, When printing with PLA I have my Z height spot on. However, when I try to print with ABS the Z height is far too high.
I am interested to know what you all change when going from PLA to ABS.
So far, the only way I have found that works, involves changing the Live Z height from the controller.
I'm guessing others have found a better way?
I use Simplify 3D and have tried changing the Global G-Code Offset Z axis all the way down to -0.5 but it has not corrected the problem.
I hope you can offer some suggestions, thanks for taking the time to read this.
Re: PLA to ABS First Layer height
I adjust my Z height for different materials. PLA was -0.4 and ABS was -0.6 for me. I usually run the v2calibration and use the live z adjust to play with it to see what sticks best.
Importantly, make sure you move your z axis up on the extruder before your prints. I put it about halfway up so the probe is not hot after the bed is preheated. I've noticed that my z-height is off and it would throw screw up my first layer as the probe somehow screws up when it's hot. You might be running into this same exact problem.
Re: PLA to ABS First Layer height
Appreciate your input, thank you.
I'm assuming you change your Z height within the S3D settings rather than on the printers Live Z Adjust?
So you go all the way down to -0.6, thats good to know, I'll try it a little lower then.
Yes, I always raise Z when heating, for the same reason you do ... better safe than sorry eh
Thanks for mentioning it though
Re: PLA to ABS First Layer height
I change the Live Z adjust. It is simpler. I would assume the difference is due to expansion of the bed at higher temperatures.
Re: PLA to ABS First Layer height
Thanks for your input,
I think the reason is due to the difference in extrusion widths between PLA and ABS, at least thats what I heard on a YT vid a while back.
But I could be wrong so don't take that as a certainty.
