MK2s upgrade / mod done

I received my MK2S update on Friday and rebuilt on of the printers on Saturday with some slight mods. I installed the plastic bearings on the y and x asis. In place of the LMU series they provided.
This thing is very quiet now! I did not know that the bearings where in such bad shape. When I removed one on the y axis all of the bearing came pouring out. I will have to do the other printer now. Just don't like paying $60 some dollars to get the parts here. Going to start to dig to find those ubolts or some other way to mount the bearings. Maybe design and print a bearing holder??

ok, the printer is now very silent.
so let me just ask some questions:

what about the accuracy of the y-carriage movements now? does the printbed keep its straight line when the movement of the y-motor changes direction quickly ?
did you do a selftest after changing to the DryLin Igus (or which one did you choose) bearings ?

and a last one: did you only change the bearings, or the rods (to DriveLin rods) as well ?

Part of the MK2S upgrade includes new rods. Could you visually notice any difference? Are they more polished than what you got with the original MK2?

Yes, I would like as well to understand the quality of the new rods, and if there is any way to source them separately/they are worth the cost of shipping

I still think that using the IGUS RJZM-01-08 for the Y axis (with the Martin M. support for them) is a better upgrade.

Hi Jeff

Well, with your experience I am led to presume you have the answers to these questions, and this raises some curiosity, as I have the complete set to install this week end, including the Igus shafts.

The components I bought are:

RJ4JP-01-08
AWMP 8mm rods

Am I to expect the above mentioned issues with this setup?

Best regards.

...Am I to expect the above mentioned issues with this setup?...
😛 here are a few users, where the usage of the drylin igus bearings (and drivelin rods) worked quite well. 😛

😕 personally i tried to install the igus bearings (and rods) twice. the first time at the y-carriage at my genuine prusa i3 mk2 (with printed bearing holders from thingiverse) and the second time at my own i3 mk2 clone.

the first attempt ended up in a skew of the whole printbed, each time the y-motor changed the movement direction. i mounted a little laser pointer at the edge of the printbed and encountered a deviation of more than 2 cm in a distance of 1m when the y-motor changed direction quickly. so i went back to the genuine bearings & rods 😡 .

the second time i tried to replace the four lm8luu bearings at my clone with 2 igus bearings for each lm8luu -> which makes up a total of 8 bearings for the y-carriage. but that was to stiff to get moved by the y-motor 😮 .

so from my experience - until now- there is either too much clearance or they are to hard to move.

➡ but in all two cases i just replaced the parts and didn't take special measures that might be required for the drylin bearings.
after all i guess they were squished to much by the bearing holders ?

💡 i think, sooner or later, i'll give them another chance.... but design my own holders then, where the drylins will be fixed only at their rim and one or two additional screws which whom i can adjust the "squish".

Re: MK2s upgrade / mod done

I have been running Igus bearings on my Mk1 and Mk2 Y axis (cable tied, with original smooth rods) for some time now without issues. If you are getting bed twisting when the bed changes direction then your build is not correct; you must have an offset on the belt.

I agree 100% with Peter. I have one MK2 with stock and one with Igus. When installing the Igus bearings the rods must be 100% perpendicular or you will get binding.

sorry Peter, can't get what you mean ? how can a belt have some offset ?

btw. according to the completely successfull calibration procedure, x and y are perfectly perpendicular at that printer.
