Major Print Fail - Broken Extruder

After months of acceptable printing, I left a print running and have had a disaster. Somehow a print (that was a max of 5mm tall) broke loose from the bed and caused a massive blob to build up around the hot end and extruder. It built up so much that it broke one of the blue cables that goes into the heater block. Is there any way to replace or repair just that or am I going to have to buy a new extruder assembly?

Thanks.

Re: Major Print Fail - Broken Extruder

You do NOT need to buy an new extruder.

You have (like many of us) broken the thermistor wiring. It is probably not likely to solder the wires together so you need to replace the thermistor.

One word of warning (learn from my mistake), once you solder it in, make sure it is routed back under the extruder like the original. I was lazy and left it off to the side, and the Home X function crimped it. It worked for a while but repeated crimping and I had to replace it again. Now solid.

Thank you, is that the correct thermistor for the MK2? it looks like it has two wires coming out of it (and really short leads).

Yes, that is the correct one. You will need to cut off the connector and solder it into your wire bundle, and make sure it is routed correctly. I have done it twice now (second time was my mistake). Not hard to do.
