Help me dianose printer problem!

A new problem cropped up and I have tried a few fixes, but I have not been able to fix or improve this issue. What should I be doing to tackle this problem...

Sorry for the links, I cannot get the damn pictures to load in a message.

Oddly the front of the 25 mm cube is nearly perfect...

http://imgbox.com/Faso7oUu

Both sides are almost identical, but I am only showing one of the two....

http://imgbox.com/65VNHdi2

And now the back.... Which is ABSOLUTELY the worst...

I do not understand why the back would be so different from the front. Both sides being similar makes sense as I would think I have an issue on the Y axis. However, the front back issue has me stumped.

Any Ideas???

Re: Help me dianose printer problem!

could be a cooling issue, the fan mostly cools the front face, and doesn't really cool the back at all can you try a lower filament temperature ?

have you tried outer perimeter first?
have you tried more perimeters?

could you try turning the cube 45 degrees? so there is a corner at the back? this might produce two good faces and two acceptable faces

regards Joan

Could it be that due to high speed as well?

Re: Help me dianose printer problem!

First, we should determine if this his a hardware problem, or a slicer problem. (I am betting slicer).

1) Have you printing things from the SD card? The ones that come pre-sliced, The planetary gears or the Marvin. Please post photo.

If those print fine - you have a slicer problem. If those exhibit the same issue you have a hardware problem. Once you know that, post specifics about which slicer you use, and the settings used, or photos of the hardware. We can then help point you in the right direction.

I am betting this is slicer settings with either a bad temp or speed.

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…

Slicer just might be it.. Great suggestions so far. I will print the marvin from the sd card and see what I get.

I have been using both Slic3r and Simplify3d... I will do some more experimentation and report back.

Thanks for the ideas.

Well thanks folks!

Marvin turned out flawless. So, I guess I have a slicer issue. With so many variables, diagnosing problems hurts my brain sometimes. I am usually pretty good at figuring problems, but this one was driving me nuts, to the point I let my printer sit idle for 3 weeks.

I guess I need to drop back to defaults on Slic3r. I was also using a profile for Simplify3d offered by another user here. I don't think I changed much except for a brim on a few models and tweaking temps for the filament I am using. I should also start keeping a log I guess. My memory is not as good at 50 as it used to be. Stinks because I was used to keeping it all in my head. Ahhhh... with age comes wisdom, but you loose some stuff too... 🙄

Okay. Start by downloading the latest Slic3r from the Prusa Driver's web page (it is in the driver's download.)

MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE INI FILE that came with it using "Load Config Bundle...".

If you start from those settings, you will be off to a good start.

Well dang... Spoke too soon.

Marvin was just fine.

That suggested that I might be printing at too high a temp (why not right)... I am currently using hatchbox pla which recommends 180 print temp on the spool. I had been printing at 210-215. So, I resliced in Slic3r and dropped the first layer to 195. Then second and above at 185. Nope. Same damn problem. So bad in fact that the pla surface becomes soo rough that the print head bumps up as it moves over various parts of the previous layers.

I am SOOOO frustrated with this damn thing. I am about to build a trebuchet and launch it into the next county!

Re: Help me dianose printer problem!

Well, still no luck.

It does not appear to be a slicer problem as it happens in both Slic3r and S3D. The rough edges and high spots causing the print head to rub over them happens at the same height every time. I am printing .15 layers. It happens around the 2.1 mm layer or so and gets worse as it builds higher.

In my feeble attempts at a fix, I ran the printer through the xyz calibration again. And, I did a self test. Oddly two self tests failed the x axis test. It stated to check for a loose pulley. There appeared to be nothing wrong, so I ran it again. Same thing. Ran again, all OK. Ran the test three more times, no x axis error. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem.

Also, why at the same height? Every time!

I hear your frustration, but we can't help unless you are more descriptive. I print Hatchbox at 215/210. It is not that. You need to show us your slicer setting so we can help you diagnose. Show us pictures. Show us settings. Otherwise we are blind, and can't see much except your frustration. Post your GCode. It could be a problem with your model, or with your settings.

Post some screen grabs of your model in the slicer.

Alright, I will post all of that in hopes someone could help. It will be several days before I can but I will do ANYTHING that can help get this figured. I work 12 hour shifts and don't get much done (at home) during the work week.

I re-downloaded Slic3r and tried again... Same problem, same place. I even tried the new Prusa Control app, which I had not before, and I had the exact same result.

Re: Help me dianose printer problem!

George,

Try slicing for yourself a Benchy.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:763622

Post photos of the printed part, and include a .zip of you .gcode.

These two will help us understand what your printer and slicer are doing. We are happy to help, but we can't without more information.
