You can do all that if you think it necessary, but unless you want to produce models with perfect accuracy, most users don't find it necessary.

Hi there!
I am a new user and wanted to say hello to everyone!
My MK2 has been shipped and will arive soon, meanwhile I am questioning myself, if an external calibration is needed.
I mean, calibration of the extruder (let the extruder extrude 10 cm of filament and measure it to correctly set the esteps), manual calibration of X and Y motors by measuring the distance of e.g. 10 cm when ordering the motor to move 10 cm, as well as measuring the thickness of the a 20 x 20 mm box to adjust the multiplier?

Hi. I haven't found it necessary yet. I've printed pla/abs without any E-step changes, with 1.75 set as diameter and 1.00 or 0.99 as multiplier which which gives correct prints for me. YMMV

Hi,

I printed several pieces that needed precision (Holes for smooth rods, or car keys buttons, etc).
It always printed perfectly.
I've printed calibration cube 10mm for the fun, and it was already perfect.

So as the others, I don't think it's necessary

Well it looks as though my thoughts were correct with the above consensus.

However, I have to say that I do calibrate my extrusion steps for each type of filament. The finish is ever so slightly better than without that calibration.

And I have also found that the filament drive pulleys do vary a bit in diameter - I have had to change one and the second had a larger diameter than the first.

The unit work really well right out of the box. The only thing I have to adjust is the Extrusion Multiplier and filament diameter. Appears to vary a lot from Manufacture to Manufacture. We currently use Algix it will vary from 1.75 to 1.71. I tried some that we purchase from eBay from a Chinese mfg. $16.00 per kg delivered and had to just junk it. Varied from over 1.86 to 1.50mm. The Esun was much better but still did not meet their claim of 1.80 to 1.70mm it was more like +or - .15mm. The Taulman seems to be about the same a Algix but cost more.

The other hint I have for new owners is to make sure the frame is seated all the way down on all thread rod. The auto level will have a lot less to do.
