heatbed stability

I've recently assembled an mk2 and I'm already successfully printing and the resolution seems on par with what I've seen on this forum.

What I've noticed is that the heatbed is not completely steady and it wobbles a little. All screws and zip ties are as tight as they can be and looking closely I believe the wobble comes from the bearings. I'm just wondering if a (very) little instability is to be expected or the head bed should be dead steady.

Thanks

It should be steady. The bed should have very little play. You'll fine a number of posts about changing bearings. I swapped my 3 Y-axis bearings to the IGUS drylin bearings, and my bed is much more steady (and quieter) now.

thanks for your reply.

do you mean that the original setup has indeed some play on the heatbed and the best solution is to change the bearings? I'm mostly worried of having assembled something wrongly or having received a defective bearing.

Oh, there is certainly a good chance you have defective bearings. As has been corroborated by many, many others on this forum, the stock bearings are of pretty bad quality and consistency. If it bothers you, you are left with either ordering a whole mess of cheap LM8UU bearings and hand-picking okay ones, or just buying better quality bearings.

It is quite possible you have bearings rattling around and it is quite possible you don't have the printer quite square. When you did the Calibrate XYZ, did it say all Axis are Perpendicular? If not, this could be one cause of the problem.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

no, the calibration went okay and the print quality seems good enough. Just the bed makes quite some noise and if I push/pull it from a corner it wobbles just a little.

Are your zip ties on all four corners of the smooth rods tight?

yes, the rods are tight.

I ordered new bearings, when I get them I will disassemble most of the base and check that everything is tight and steady.

Re: heatbed stability

I replaced the stock bearings with igus drylin RJZM-01-08 ( http://www.igus.eu/wpck/2292/drylin_r_rjum_01 ). they are like "standard" drylin but with an aluminum enclosure.

The heatbed is now rock solid and definitely quieter. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Also I noticed that some of screws loosened over time, so I put some glue in the threads since I was at it.
