firmware cannont select port
i have downloaded 3.0.8 firmware and it didn't see the port
so i follow the advice to go 3.0.7 first.. still the drop down doesn't show the printer
it connects fine in simplify3d and prontface, but it doesn't show in the firmware updater
i am running windows 7 64bit if it helps

Hi Joe,
did you install the last driver package ? Version 1.7.4 ? You can get it from there: http://www.prusa3d.com/drivers/ . I believe the USB drivers are needed for the firmware updater.

i did, and even tried the older package
the printer prints fine, but the firmware updater just can't see the port

Odd as I thought Prusa said they had solved this problem and had updated the 3.0.8 link. I might be wrong mind. 😕 Where di you download from? The forum or the support drivers page?

Well, the issue corrected was that the upgrade didn't end in some situation, but in this case it was still possible to find the virtual COM port from the firmware upgrade tool.
Joe, when you connect your printer to your computer via USB, how are labeled the ports on the Windows device manager ?

it comes up as com12 and i have been able to print to it from simply3d no problems
i close simplfy3d, check windows device manager and it still shows up as com12
but when i go into the firmware tool, it doesn't show anything in the drop down box

Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT) - what is the name of the COM12 port?
Are you connecting via a USB Hub or directly from a socket on the PC?

it's a laptop and it's a direct connection to the printer from the port on the laptop
i will post a screenshot of the device manager tonight

Making some huge assumptions here, and probably very wrong...
There were quite a few laptops that were not quite as Win10 ready as claimed. After some time manufacturers put out a BIOS update to correct the problem. I know this from a model railway forum where the users had a particular USB/serial train controller connecting at 115200 baud.

Quick advice, without warranty: try to remap virtual COM port to one with lower number (select unused between COM1 and COM4). You can do that in device manager. It might help in some cases.

COM 1 & 2 probably wouldn't work since these are generally hardware ports on the computer or at least in the BIOS and for all practical purposes reserved, could try to shut off in the BIOS but no real need. 3 & 4 were basically 1 & 2 with different address in case of address conflicts that 1 & 2 use. In times past high speed add in serial cards were common and used COM 1 & 2 as their attached devices and software/driver expected that so the onboard ports could be switched to COM 3 & 4 addresses so they could still be used.
I do have a printer that uses 4. I would say 5 and up should be ok.
If it is Win10 that could be an issue.

I would concur with David on this; on the model railway forum, they insisted on using COM ports 1 through 4, although I never had any issues with higher port numbers, others did.

Still no go with the new firmware updater
i tried to set it to com1 or com2 still does not see it, plug/unplug, turn on and off, changed baud rate from 9600 to 115200
nothing, it doesn't show up in the list.. but it prints fine tether (com15)

One thing I had in the past with updaters who use VCP (virtual COM port through USB) is, that they sometimes need a COM port lower than 7 (1 or 2 would be perfect). This is due to fancy reasons comming from the old ages of COM ports.
I'd suggest to set another COM port which you are able to do within the system settings of windows. I can't give a click by click description due to the lac of having a non english Windows 😉
PS: Its just guessing and not printer related but often the problem regarding VCP. 😎

Any news here? I'm having the same problem. Printer works fine, can easy connect to it via Pronterface using COM4, but the Firmware Updater V2 does not show anything in the drop down list. I'm using Windows 8, Prusa Version 1.7.6 and want to update the firmware from 3.0.9 to 3.0.10.
I also tried to assign the printer to different COM ports with no luck. Tried COM 1 to 4. Reinstalling prusa Firmware Updater leads to no result as well..
any suggestions?

Anyone who cannot choose PORT in the firmware updater, try right click the updater icon and "Run As Administrator".
I solved this issue by this method.
