Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Hello,
I've repeatedly tried to print with Filamentive Dark Wood, a supposedly very forgiving wood filament, however, no matter what I do, 1 hour into the print I get a clog. I tried increasing speed; decreasing speed; increasing retraction; slowing down retraction; decreasing retraction...
Everyone is saying this filament "just works"... well, it does not for me and their support has not been very helpful 🙁 :(....
Help.
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Go up on temp?
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Wouldn't increasing temp make it even more soft and clogging prone?
I've printed at 200, 205 and 215 with the same result...
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Wood filaments are generally very stringy, so you will have to accept that.
Retraction should be no more than 1mm, ideally only 0.8mm otherwise there is a possibility of clogging.
You may want to try turning off both retraction and wipe and increase non-printing move speeds a little whilst printing at lower temps (test at 190, 195 and 200).

Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Create an heattower and try it again, maby from 250 down to 190 °C.
Every filament has an perfect printing temperature. It depends on your setup, recommendations from manufacturers are only indications.

Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
It might be also connected with the nozzle, standard 0.4 mm can get clogged. Bigger diameter from hardened steel would be better, because there is also a problem with the abrasion.

Thank you for the suggestions!
I will try messing with retraction and temp.
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
OK, so I ruled out the following:
- it's not the temperature
- it's not retraction: disabling it I get the same lovely jam after an 1h:20 roughly of printing
- It's not the speed, increasing speed makes the jam happen sometimes faster
It seems like it's a matter of how much filament passes through the nozzle. At a specific length the nozzle clogs and filament can no longer be pushed through. At that point the feeder wheel starts skipping and it digs a whole in the filament and effectively stops pushing it down. The printer than starts air printing.
Every time,no matter the settings. I am starting to think there is something wrong with the extruder assembly itself. I did not assemble it myself, it was done by the Prusa team, I just popped it in. Maybe there some space between the heatbreak and the nozzle that allows for filament to build up inside the extruder? And the Wood filament being softer is the only one that gets affected by this defect?
I am kinda pissed that everyone asked says that this filament prints with regular PLA settings and 0.4mm nozzle but I am unable to get it to work.
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
Have you measured the diameter of the filament? I have a roll that varies greatly, from 1.60 to 1.87mm in a 50ft section. Jams any time it gets to the 1.87 areas. I have since thrown that filament away.
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
After a couple of jamms and failed prints I decided to raise the temp to 225C.
And guess what, I got my first 3.5h print that did not result in a clog.
I also increased the speed to 40mm/s but I don't know if that matters and slowed down retraction to 5mm/s.
I hope it was not fluke!
Re: Filamentive Dark Wood - NO GO
After that print, I still got a clog.
The FIlamentive guys were very supportive and they have sent me a fresh spool, free of charge!
