Filament stuck in heatbreak

Ill preface with saying this is my first machine with the all metal v6, I have 3 other Originals, all using v6-lite obviously.

I had a serious jam after my first few days printing and nothing would get rid of it. I managed to fix the issue, but only after disassembling the entire hotend, and was able to push the filament out of the heatbreak. it happened after withdrawling the filament for a filament change

I have probably 5000ish hours on my other 3 machines, and havent had that particular issue on the v6lite.

So is there anything i should be doing diffrently on a V6 to avoid this happening in the future?

Re: Filament stuck in heatbreak

Hi Erron

I run the V6 in my Mk1. This issue has happened to me only once and I believe it was after a longer print when printing PLA using a higher temp than normal (I was printing very fast).

The heat break got a bit warmer than usual and the filament was melting higher up in the heat break, so when pulled out it left the soft filament in there and unfortunately it solidified there and thereafter it was not possible to warm it sufficiently to push out.

It seems that it stuck in the very small gap at the end of the PTFE tubing. When I reassembled the extruder, I made sure the end of the PTFE tube was as square as possible and that it was pushed firmly down into the heat break. Never happened again.

Thanks peter. 😀 I did put a fresh tube of PTFE down in there. The old one had VERY VERY slight knick in it when i pulled it out, so that may have contributed to it getting stuck. Hopefully this fixes the issue for the future! Thanks!

Hi Erron,

I am fairly new to 3D printers. I have the same issue where the filament will not come out, and is stuck in the heat block.

i was hoping I would not have to disassemble it... was it hard to remove the filament once it was disassembled?

Did you have to take the whole extruder apart or is their a short cut?

Thanks

Hi Erron,

Correction, stuck in the heat break, not heat block...

I had to take the hotend apart to remove it, but its really simple (actually easy to take apart than the V6-lite if you ask me) You can just follow the assembly instructions for the e3d , but in reverse, (and ignore the parts about the inserting the heater thermistor and all that since you dont need to remove those to take things apart)

http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/E3D-v6_Assembly

Once i had the heatbreak separated, i just turned it upsidown and pushed the piece of filament out with a small needle, it came out real easy it just wouldnt go the other way (toward the melt zone :P)

One more thought on why this happens; could be due to excessive retraction. Check your settings; it should not be more than 1.5mm, otherwise soft filament can be drawn up into the heat break.

I was using the S3D preset at the time. looks like it's set to 1.5mm... I was using the ESUN's new PLA+ (or pla pro whatever you wanna call it.) But it doesnt seem any softer than normal PLA
