Filament filled and clogged whole space around an extruder and jammed (cannot detach) + MINTEMP error (cannot melt)
Hi,
My print has failed and detached from the bed but while the printer was unattended it continued to feed a filament (PLA) that filled whole space around the extrusion head (filling in holes too) - see attached pictures. Now the bulky melted material is everywhere (that was a bigger part that failed unnoticed close from the beginning). I cannot melt it with the nozzle since moreover I got an error MINTEMP. I cannot access the extruder because everything is just jammed with the melted filament so that's a deadlock.
I tried gently to melt it from beneath with a heat gun, but I still can't detach material close to the head and I am also afraid this may melt printer parts themselves.
Perhaps is there a different way to a) remove a jammed material and b) fix MINTEMP error? Those two problems have to somehow tackled together I guess.
I will very much appreciate all clues and help.

Nice tumor. Mine was almost as nice - but you have cooler contrasting colors.
First. Tumors like this can be avoided if you get your Live Adjust Z set correctly and keep the bed clean. Under first print/calibration there are some good hint on how to do this. THE FIRST LAYER IS KEY.
But that does not help you right now. Like most of us, you got to printing with a marginal Z adjust, and the luck of the draw got us some very beautiful failures.
So. Your Min Temp error is because your tumor broke the wires from the thermistor in the heating block. The controller can't get a temperature reading so (out of safety) won't heat the end. You will need to replace the thermistor once you get the tumor off. Good news, it is cheap. (Sold at anyplace that sells parts for the E3D V6 hotend.)

While you are getting that, you should get a sock too. They can help in situations like this.

Now, to carefully remove that tumor. It is unlikely you broke the heat cartridge wiring, but if you are aggressive with removal, you can, so be careful.
You need a combination of heat, small needle nose pliers, and patience. I found a heat gun and soldering iron worked for different parts of my tumor. If you can selectively free your plastic parts, and remove them, then you can do more with the heat gun. Once you have it all up and running again, a short run at hot temperatures can remove the residue but you need to get the majority off by hand.

I also got the same problem, and I was really upset this kind of filament jam coul'd even happen, after 2 months of relatve peacefull printing..
My "jam was a bit more messy, And i really mean more..
The PLA juste trapped all the wires around the extruder (heat cartridge wire and thermistor wire), the extruder, the heatblock, and a major part of the printer orange plastic parts, that have even sometimes melt.....
insane that this mess can even occur...
I tried to heat up the extruder to soften the PLA so i can remove it but it didn't work at all. There was always a huge alert bip sound and the LCD displaying extruder temperature up to about 700 degres. So i was frced to turn the printer off.
I had to clean everything up with a small electrical saw that happen to also heat up and soften the PLA.
Couldn't find other solution cause the PLA was building ont every orange plastic part. i needed to remove all the hotend, from top of the heatsink to the tip of the nozzle...
SO, being a newbie in 3D printing (but using it for my job, and it's a huge part of my new process), i finally found the pieces i needed to change :
i bought a whole E3D V6 (0,4mm nozzle, no bowden, 24volts), and new plastic parts from prusa shop.
once everything was properly mounted on the printer, i encountered many problems, and some are unexpected :
- first, the LCD displays random characters, and finally switches to the usual main screen,
- there is a MINTEMP ERROR showing on the LCD,
- heatbed can heat up but not the extruder,
- all the axes rods are messed up, unable to reset any of it or to calibrate right.
Z axe is setting its reference point at the height he's located, so it hit the heatbed looking for the O point ou of the 210mm
X axe seems a bit halting moving right or left, and never reaches the endstop
Y axe is also not reaching the endstop, and doesn't stay still when approaching each edge (it goes a bit back du to wires dragging, that pulls it back or forth),
the belt of the Y axe seems to have really loosen up (not a big deal), but the Y axe motor pulley seems to be rotating wrong, and doesn't drive the heatbed right.
My Printer is totally messed up, i use it for my work and that's a real pain in the a**..
I really need help to fix this up

your Prusa i3 MK2s has a 12V power supply!
The miniRAMbo can handle up to 15A 12-35V for the heated bed and 10A 12-28V for the rest http://reprap.org/wiki/MiniRambo
IF you want to go for 24V heater cartridge you will need some more things:
- Power supply with Dual output one: 12V 10-15A for the heated bed (this cannot be rewired or so) second 24V around 5 to max 10A for the rest of the electronics.
- Or a second 24V power supply, but not sure if that is a good idea...
- New 5050 blower 24V fan https://e3d-online.com/404020-blower-fan
- New hotend 24V fan https://e3d-online.com/30x30x10mm-12v-dc-fan (there is an option for 24V)
- Or a decent voltage regulator(s) 24V to 12V between the miniRAMbo and fans
Maybe you should ask them to send you the 12V version.
But I think you just need:
If the heater block is okay you just need the thermistor and

Do you think this whole mess can anyhow affect the calibrating ? i know it would be weird but can a dysfunctionnal extruder heating create a problem on the motherboard ( and ruin the calibrating system chipset) ?

could you cleanup the blob? can you get the E3Dv6 out and try to remove the rest with a hairdryer or heat gun?
As said depending what is broken you can buy what you need.

Although it doesn't help you much now, personally for unattended prints, I bought a wireless outlet. I also had an IP cam, so if I need to print something when I'm not at home, the camera is on, which I can watch from my phone, and the wireless outlet is connected to the printer. I occasionally check the camera to see if everything is going alright, if there are any issues, I go to the app for the wireless outlet, and just shut the power off to the 3D printer to stop things before it's too late.
I believe it's a relatively cheaper solution and saves you from bigger headaches. This is the wireless outlet that I've got;

You can do the same remote monitoring with a Raspberry PI and OctoPi. It can send you text like notifications (Telegram) or allow you to watch the video remotely. You can also abort the print remotely.

I had the same thing happen to me today. The mass was cooled hard. I preheated the extruder to PLA specs and started pulling chunks off with a pair of needle noses pliers. I almost got all the material off the extruder and then a chunk of the extruder cover ripped off. It had melted during the preheat, I guess. Now I need a new extruder cover and maybe an extruder body.
I live in Mississippi, USA. I looked on Prusa's shop and the parts are only $3.40 US, but the shipping is $60...I sent them an email to see if they can give me a break..
Meanwhile, a friend has offered to print the parts for me at work and he can get me back to running tomorrow night. He asked me if the parts have to be in ABS and asked me if Nylon would work.

I finally got a12 volts heat cartridge and obviously it works.
I don't know if it's connected to this problem but i can't get a propper calibration anymore . Z is always crashing into the heatbed, and always resets its home point where it's located when i turn the printer off, even at the middle of the Z rods height.
I don't know if it's due to a wrong assemblying, or to a hardware problem.

I don't know if it's due to a wrong assemblying, or to a hardware problem.
- check the cables on the miniRAMbo
- Goto Calibration->Show end stops and press manually the x and y end stop
- check if your PINDA is working correctly. If you turn on the printer it should have a red light, take some metal close to the PINDA head and check if it triggers (red light goes off). Double check if the there is a broken cable by moving the Z-axis up and down while looking on the red light, and by moving the extruder cables a bit. The PINDA red light should be always ON, except it detects some metal. Also shown under Calibration->Show end stops
- Do the Calibration->Calibrate Z to move both x-axis sides to the top.
- run the Calibration-Selftest.
- If the PINDA red light is not working and the Fans aren't spinning check the Fuses on the miniRAMbo
- Double check if your y-assembly is still ok, maybe you moved something

But still this Z calibrating issue. the extruder is always shifted 4 (units ?) above the heatbed. meaning the Z home point is virtually located 4 units underneath the heatbed.. so I cannot run a selftest or calibration until this problem is solved.
Nothing moved during the whole hotend replacement, that's unbelivable this printer is that messed up.

Can you check the distance between PINDA to BED and NOZZLE to BED the difference should be around 0.8 - 1.00 mm

I didn't have such a big tumor, by luck in my case the melted PLA was almost all confined to the metal parts of my hotend. I happened to check remotely on my phone, and saw the spaghetti mess forming... it had probably extruded for 30-40 min before I cancelled the print remotely.
Advice on another forum suggested heat the hotend to 100C, where PLA starts to soften just a little, but doesn't get very sticky. Then you can peel off big pieces or strips - that removes a lot of material cleanly. Then I heated to 215C and wiped the rest off with alcohol and wipes (careful don't burn fingers at 215C like me).
If you have a big tumor or PLA stuck on the non-hot parts, maybe the 100C procedure won't help you... but consider it for the purpose of peeling off some material cleanly.
For prevention: clean the bed thoroughly with alcohol before every print, and make sure the first layer or so gets started without clumping, etc. In my case I rushed out the door without doing either of these.
