External spool holder and PTFE tube
Hi,
I love the new design but I am not crazy about the top mounted spool holder.
How easy would be to integrate an external spool holder and a PTFE feeding tube?
Is there an exiting design for the original Prusa i3 that can be reused?
My other printer has the following setup:
?dl=0
I would like to reuse the spool holder.

I believe that there are quite a variety of spool holder designs on thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/search/page:1?q=spool+holder&sa=
Have a look at those; it should be fairly simple to adopt one of them to your own requirements.

I use this one on all my machines

Granted its still top loaded (I have limited desk space) but it spins alot more smoothly than the default holder + changing spools is a lot easier.

That is the same spool holder I'm using. I also really like it and definitely agree it is much less of a pain when changing spools than the original hubless holder. I did tweak the arm design slightly on my build to help with Octopi cable management.

Christian,
There is nothing stopping you from using your current setup. You'll just need a much longer PTFE tube to reach from the container to the extruder.

Plus a connector to fit the tube onto the extruder body. Orr the motor would have to be moved to the other end of the tube as in Bowden.

Re: External spool holder and PTFE tube
Thank you for all the advice.
I should have phrased my question better :).
I am actually looking for the connector part, how to hook it up to the extruder. I already have the spool holder.
I assume one of the printed parts would need to be modified, is there such a part on thingiverse already?

You will require one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nylon-Pneumatic-MALE-STUD-FITTING-METRIC-BSP-tube-inline-push-fit-connector-/321632323070?var=&hash=item4ae2c7c5fe:m:mTgZbWYrqz_IoSRt6WewUUQ or similar
You should be able to drill out a slightly undersized hole in the extruder body where the existing filament entry point is
Although the parts are not 100% fill, because it's a join between 2 parts, it should hold the connector.
Either that or you could re-design and print the parts with a threaded hole.
