E3D Thermistor goes bad?

A failed print gummed up the thermistor wires on my MK2. While trying to clean it, I ended up pulling the wires apart. I bought an E3D heat block upgrade kit which came labeled as a "V6 Universal Fixing Kit". Rather than replacing the entire heat block, I just replaced the thermistor with the new one (which has a connector, the old one was just heat shrink tubing) and ran the new wires back to the electronics board. Everything worked great for about 40 hours of printing, but now while the heat bed reports 25c while the hot end is reporting only 12c causing a min temp failure.

Did this thermistor simply go bad and I need to replace it as well, or is something else going on?

I suspect that when I replaced the thermistor cartridge, I must have had the wires pulled too tightly from the thermistor to the connector that goes back to the electronics. While trying to disconnect it to verify that the connection was properly made, I broke both wires coming from the thermistor. A power off / power on confirms that the temperature reads the same when the wires are broken. So the stress of the head moving back and forth must have broken the wires over time simply because I had the wires pulled too tightly.

Looks like I'll need to order another thermistor cartridge and then figure out a way to better mount it.

The v6.1 thermistor cartridge connector does not fit into the slot of the x-carriage assembly, which is why my wires were pulled so tightly, I ended up pulling the connector from the thermistor cartridge to sit behind the slot, and connected it to the second wire to the electronics. I knew it was tight, but it seemed ok.

The instructions you reference suggest cutting away the connectors and splicing them together. On the original thermistor cartridge, I tried to do something like that, but found I couldn't strip the nylon coating away from the wires without cutting the wires.

I *like* the connector, and will see if I can come up with a way of using it. I have a spare x-carriage printed out of PETG to experiment with...
