Documenting issues to UPGRADE to a PRUSA MK2 from a NON ORIGINAL prusa 3d Printer
I received my PRUSA MK2 upgrade today and decided to document my upgrade procedure to a PRUSA MK2 from a non Oroginal PRUSA. This may prove to be a very difficult thing but we wil lsee .
ISSUE 1- no minRAMBO -
My existing 3D printers all have RAMPS / MEGA so the kit did not come with a RAMPS board. The question is will I need to buy a RAMBO board or can I utilise my MEGA with RAMPS to incorporate the PRUSA SOFTWARE. I am not sure what software the original PRUSA MK2 uses on RAMBO so it might be good to hear from people who know about this first issue. I read briefly the RAMBO is a RAMPS with onboard drivers but perhaps we can highlight the differences . to buy or not buy a miniRAMBO.?

The upgrade kit is described thus:
Original Prusa i3 Plus to MK2 upgrade kit
It was never designed for non-original printers, but I believe that a couple of users have attempted the conversion. I think that unless you have the "Original" Mk1, there will be very little support for the upgrade.
You will find it very difficult to use the Prusa firmware with a RAMPs board and much of the code for that controller has been stripped out. You would be better off taking firmware designed for your board and modifying that where appropriate. I believe that main differences will be pinouts, but I really don't know. You will probably end up purchasing a RAMBo.
Peter
Edit: I think another difference may be the digital current control of the steppers rather than analogue on the RAMPS (potentiometer).
Please note: I do not have any affiliation with Prusa Research. Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage…

Yes I think miniRambo may be a safe ecnomic choice at this stage . The question is does the standard RAMBo software go into the prusa or is there a special flash to take into account the calibration system of the MKll

There is definitely a special flash (available in the support section) and it's made specifically for the mini rambo.

Find attached first working vase being printed by our upgrade kit using RAMPS card, upgraded from parts pre Rambo was offered as the owner claim anyway. Colour kit will also be added when it eventually arrive. It does run the 3.0.9 original firmware with calibration and Z adjust etc. Including saving the cal. setting during the original cal meander printing example that was a bit surprising. Last hurdle was that Vref worked when setting less than 4V on the white driver cards installed and this so far prints w/o material cooling nozzle just the fan as any other give Thermal runaway fault. So work in progress but it do print. Olov

Hello,
i also had no original Prusa MK1 and succesfully upgraded it with the kit.
I use an Rumba board and modified the Prusa MK2 Firmware to fit my Board. It wasnt that hard to do. Honestly i dont know exactly what i did, cause its already some month ago. But it was manly the pin configuration.
So i have all features available and it prints perfectly.
I had to get some srews and other mechanicle parts aswell.

Yes it's all in the pins, we did need a couple of iterations and a newer version compiler to get it all working, will be interesting to find out what pins the color swapping use. We split the back of the hot end holder due to too long screws so that was reprinted. First vase finished ok.

Hi olov.l,
Could I please get the modified pins.h from you?
Best Regards
