Clicking Extruder with PLA

I still have some issues with my new MK2S. One is that sometimes, it seems more often immediately after retractions, the extruder clicks and the filament skips. For example see the Video . This was during the print of the provided Tree-Frog model using the provided PLA. Tried adjusting the tension screws (initially they were at approx 14mm like written in the troubleshooting post), increased Nozzle temp a bit, reduced speed a bit, but I could not manage to improve this. The extruder gear is in line with the filmanet and clean. Clues? I can extrude miles with the load filament function without a single click.

Clues appreciated. Thanks!

I know you said the filament is lined up going into the extruder. But IMO it looks like the hobbed gear could be moved back to the motor a bit. I could be wrong and maybe misreading the angle of the photo.

Just a thought,

Neal

Hi Neal,

thanks for your thoughts, looked at the pic after your post and felt the same. But looking at it directly it is well in line, see this pic.

Regards,

Frank

No worries, it made me double check it. Also checked cable connection and today the same print worked fine, without me noticing a click. Strange - but so far good 🙂 Will watch further...

Re: Clicking Extruder with PLA

This looks like the exact problem I was having after my build last week. I finally determined that the tension was not enough on the extruder bearing.

I connected my laptop to the printer using the PronterFace application. I set the hot end temperature to 215 and I extruded 100 mm of filament at a time at a flow rate of 100. This caused about 45 seconds of extrusion. I found that I would hear that clicking noise 1-3 times per extrusion and each click would result in a divot in the filament coming out of the nozzle. Sometimes the cooled filament would actually snap at those points.

I then tightened the two tension screws one quarter turn until the clicking went away and then I tightened them another quarter turn or so past that. Those problem went away.

The problem with the tree frog model and the planetary gear model is that the extruder is going forward and back rapidly. It was only when I printed these models that started seeing the problem. In fact, I printed the Prusa nameplate, the Benchy and the planetary gear without seeing this problem. I then printed the gear again because I was trying to solve the bed adhesion issue and the problem you are having started halfway through the print. It then happened with the tree frog and the gear again. It basically started happening after some point in time and kept happening until I fixed it.
