Yes - John O'Shaughnessy is my name. Within that profile, I use the MakerGeeks (MG) Raptor PLA most often.

I used the paper method only to dial in the hotend roughly. After that I printed the V2Calibration gcode to dial it in properly. To be honest, the lines are so thin in the calibration file, and also on my skirt, that I would have trouble acutally seeng how much the filament is squished.. But it might not be that much of a problem now, after I have adhesion.. My problem was that when printing the V2Calibration file, I had such bad adhesion that if I adjusted the Live Z values a microscopic amount in the wrong direction, the line would float on the pei, catching on the hotend and make a mess before I could adjust it back..

I will try to adjust the live Z now when starting a print, and see how I fare..

The print I started last night, came out perfect! see picture.. It was a fairly long print, (about 10 hours) but didn't falter.. see picture:

My Live Z adjust value for this print was -0.080

Thanks, I will give that profile a try with my Go-To PLA brand.. It's not one of the well known brands, but have served me very well.

Print came out fine, as you can see in my previous post. It was printed with support for the hinges and top brim, which is why I am excited to try the Simplify3D profile.. The supports in S3D is easier to remove, and works pretty good.

I've never seen -0.080 values for Live Z Adjust, I think -0.15 has been som kind of record so far, so you break that, and thats why I still think something is not 100% correct. But I might be wrong of course! If you just continue printing you'll see if you get consistent good results, or not 🙂

Have you adjusted your extruder motor, to make sure that you're spot on when it comes to the extrusion multiplier?

Thanks! Well.. from total failure to record breaker.. that's not bad 🙂 To be honest I looked around for extruder settings, but could not find how to adjust it. I'm used to editing marlin directly, and uploading the new firmware.. These "in menu" adjustments are mostly new to me.

But given that the rest of the print does quite well, I'm not worried about it right now..

Unless you meant adjusting first layer extrusion in Slic3r or S3D? I did all the calibration on the machine even before I installed a slicer..

Very strange. If you open the FFF in a text file, the filament options should be at the bottom.

I just looked over my local version. It looks fine. I'll upload it here. Try this one, or download it and compare to the other in a text editor. (the name may be different in the profile field, but other than that, I think they should be identical).

I've compressed it with zip as I can't attach an FFF file.

I looked at the settings comparing them to the one from Prusa. I see you chose to use the Auto extrusion width. (which chose 0,48). and Prusa set the width manually to 0,40. Have you tried measuring the parts printed to see if this has any ill effects on dimensional accuracy?

You will see quite a few changes in my FFF. Many of the configuration items interact (such as infill outline overlap, speeds, etc.), so it is difficult to look at one item to gauge impact without looking at many configurations together.

I printed 17 boxes in PLA when I was doing my testing last week, (including against a Prusa Slic3r config, and the Prusa RC4 FFF S3D config). While my boxes were only 20x20x20mm, I measured each with a digital caliper and they were all very similar in size.

Your experience will also be influenced by the specific filament you use as well. These were all done with MakerGeeks Raptor PLA.

Those look nice, John. I tried your MG Raptor PLA settings with my own PLA brand, and it came out flawless. Really great edges and the support material was easy to get off, and did an amazing job.

I was printing from pronterface, so too bad that windows decided to "upgrade" about 10 minutes before the print finished! (grrr. windows..)

Started it again now tho, after "adjusting" windows update.. (turn off..)

Too bad about the Windows upgrade issue! I've now switched to using a Raspberry Pi 3 with OctoPrint to feed my printer. Much less likely to crash as the Code on OctoPi is trimmed down to a very small, stable system.

I'm glad to hear the configuration is working for you! I think most end of with minor changes over time, but it is nice to have a good starting point.

I've been having massive bed adhesion issues too and i've been cleaning with IPA 70% wipes. I wonder if that could be my issue too.

Just printed a small ring in COPPERFILL both after cleaning the bed with IPA 70% and using a glue stick.
With IPA it lifted off the bed at around 30%. With glue stick it printed perfectly to 100%.

I don't have a PI3, but I do have a couple of PI 2's.. I think they would be sufficient for the octopi.. I was actually considering using a Wifi-enabled sd card instead, as it is an easy an affordable way to add Wifi capabilities to he MK2, and there is actually support for it in the firmware.

I think you will find that you don't need any gluestick for printing pla or abs.. copperfill I do not have any experience with, but there should be someone out there that has.. Or just try it without.

I now use Acetone to clean my bed, as this is easily available here, and the bad IPA I was using was just screwing everything up. I also sanded my PEI bed with a incredibly fine grit sandpaper (2000 grit). This and the acetone cleaning between prints have been absolutely flawless.

I am printing something as we speak near the front of the bed to see if the issue goes away.. I only have a few things I want to print in ABS currently so seem to spend more time 'refinding' the right settings when I do use it.

I have a small wifi adapter that cost me £5 for the Pi, works great and when I tried out Octopi they work fine. Although I couldn't get the camera side working which was what I wanted it for. Instead I am now using the Pi Noir and plain old Raspbian with a simple command line to capture photos every 60 seconds. Had to move the printer though as light from the window made the first attempt hazy. designing a Pi mount as I write this to allow me to connect and disconnect as I use it for other things (dog feeder when I go out) (which incidentally will be getting a rebuild because the current Lego build can now be printed.
