Airbrush usage for our 3D print?

Hello,

Referring to my other thread http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk2-f23/pla-possible-to-chrome-t4107.html in which I'm trying to chrome a 3D print, I was wondering how many people is using an airbrush for post-processing our prints.

I've seen there are reasonable chap solutions, like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/B002RI8K8C

Any experiences?

I need to know if that would be a purchase I could consider, or if it would be something I would not use (expect for the experiment in the above thread).

Many thanks for sharing your experiences!

PS: I'm printing 99% in PLA - dunno if that makes difference in choosing to purchase an airbrush or not.

Yeah, that's similar to the kit I use.

You just have to make sure that you prime the model all over first, so the colours don't wick along the layer lines.

Some of my models are painted in this video:

I don't know your experience level with painting, but I recently found a couple nice resources for Airbrushing model info.

"OrcNerdPainter" has a couple intro videos that I found inspiring and really got me thinking about an airbrush

"nillabean" is a 3D printer/streamer who is getting into airbrushing, fun to watch and learn with him

I use an airbrush to paint my models. Always use a primer first as others have said.

Wow Peter, great models and painting, I watched your video, wonderful. Well done. Your prints are great.

Thanks Robert for sharing the videos (I'll look at them later this morning) and Nigel for your contribution as well.
Which PRIMER is suggested? Every kind that works on plastic?

I find acrylic paints best. This one is available in various colours: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VALLEJO-AIRBRUSH-PAINT-MODEL-AIR-SURFACE-PRIMER-WHITE-200ML-74-600-/381533159974?hash=item58d5260226:g:RBoAAOSwEppUUPLT

For colours, I have a good range of Humbrol paints: https://www.humbrol.com/uk-en/shop/paints.html and thinners: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VALLEJO-AIRBRUSH-PAINT-MODEL-AIR-AIRBRUSH-THINNER-60ML-71-361-/261801477602?hash=item3cf49585e2:g:0e8AAOSwBLlU-Bzl

Hello!

I'm back 🙂
Well, I've purchased an airbrush (for beginners) and a set of ALCLAD2 colors.
If the result will be enough nice (in case it's my fault), I'll post some pictures 🙂

@PJR, Peter, do you use a particular primer to prepare the surface before painting?
Are your colors ready to use o do you need always thinner or whatelse?

Thanks!

Simon
