Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

Hi there

I am having a strange Problem with the Multi Material Upgrade. I just recently upgraded My MK2 to the multi material version. My first Print shows some strange underextrusion (see pictures). I used the pre sliced Gear bearing. The middlepart with only one material prints just fine. But the top and the bottom are severely underextruding. The same phenomena can be seen on the purge tower. I have no idea what causes this. maybe someone can enlighten me.

If you add your picture to your post, I will be able to look at them and maybe be able to assist, otherwise I will not.

Peter does not go to third party hosting sites. Please imbed your photo in the forum using "attachments". This makes them easier for us to view (endlessly clicking in and out of other sites - of questionable origin - is very time consuming and risky, and the photos do not stay for future reference for future users.)

You issue looks like a clog (?) on your final layers.

Is your printer in an enclosure?

Here are the embeded pictures.

I dont think this was caused by a clog because it happens at the top and bottom of the print. Also the orange filament prints just fine for itself. But in combination with the other filaments it underextrudes as well.

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

Yeah, that's one extruder not loading properly.

Any chance you could print a model which does not use the blocking extruder as a test? Just to ensure that it is only one extruder, then we can take it further.

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

Pleasure.

If it is just one extruder having the problem it could be one of several issues:

Grub screw on filament drive pulley (Loktite 290)
Filament tension
Pathway through MUX (including cooling tube/festo/lower end of MUX)
Temp setting for that filament
Filament

So don't use the failing extruder or filament.

If your test print also fails, then it may be a general temperature too high issue.

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

I printed the dual color marvin with Extruder 2 and 3. Extruder 2 was using the blue filament Extruder 3 the gold one.

To recap

Print 1 (Gear)
Extruder 1: Orange
Extruder 2: Blue
Extruder 3: Black
Extruder 4: Gold
Problem: Orange (Extruder 1 was underextruding) Extruder 3 might be underextruding as well but it could be because of the orange failing

Print 2 (Gold/Blue Marvin)
Extruder 1: Empty
Extruder 2: Blue
Extruder 3: Gold
Extruder 4: Empty
Problem: Bue seems to be fine and Gold (Extruder 3) cut marvins face into slices. Not sure if extruders fault or if the problem lies with the slicer (Prusa Control)

Further actions: Printing Marvin with Extruder 2 and 4 to determine if the slicer is at fault or the Extruder 3. Will update tomorrow.

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

OK, so it's not a single extruder.

There is either a hardware issue (MUX body/PTFE/Heat break) or your temps are too high.

Remember that no two printers will generate the same nozzle temp (due to thermistor tolerances etc) so it may be that your printer is hotter at printing temp than the "average".

Can you print Marvin 5 degrees cooler and if there is still a problem, try reducing by another 5 degrees?

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

I tried to print the marvin with 5 10 and 15 degrees cooler. The results were clogs or spaghetti after some printing.

As for the Hardware. There should be no issue as i just got the multimaterial kit. The PTFE Tubes are fine and dont have any obstructions. However they are not all the same lenght. One seems to be a bit shorter. Not printing with the Extruder connected to the shorter one did not help though so it cant be the tube. The Y-Splitter seems to be fine as well as I can push all the filaments through without any resistance. I cant say if the heatbreak is OK or not, what can I do to test it?

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

Yeah, not talking about the Bowden tubes, but the PTFE tube in the extruder.

As far as that's concerned, have a look at my "Blockage Troubleshooting" thread.

Re: Underextrusion in Multimaterial Parts

What brand filament? I had similar problems with MakerGeek filament and it would eventually clog completely. I could never get a good print no matter what temps I tried.
